7prc > 7rm ??

I agree with the comments that if you are going to hand load, the 7RM or 280AI can do about anything you need/want with a variety of combination of loads. If you are going to shoot factory ammo then the 7 PRC might be better for you. I have a 280AI that shoots very well, and feel that i dont need another 7 at thr moment.

I did recently purchase a sako s-20 in 6.5 PRC. Out of the box using factory hornady ammo we were able to stretch it out to 800m before missing thr 1000m target. Bought it for a hunt out west, because I didnt want to bang up my 264WM. Is it a 264 WM? No. Is it very accuate ? Absolutely! 3000 fps suppressed is somethjng a little different. I will try to formulate my own load. It come down to preference. Same arguement can be made for 6.5 Cm versus thr 6.5x55.
or 260 rem

Well Mr. Rat23 , I am also looking at rifles right now chambered to the 7mmPRC. Im down to the Weatherby Accumark Pro or Elite/ or the Browning X Bolt Hells Canyon. Now the only 7 mm anything I own is a 7x57 Mauser sporter. I ( Personal Opinion ) , think the ballistics of the 7mm PRC are very respectable for long range target shooting. I also have come to see that there are also excellent bullet choices for the person who may want to HUNT , with this new caliber. For, me it will for target use only, as I have other rifles Id like to hunt with. I am going to have a 26 inch barrel with a Break, and try to put together an11 to 12 pound rifle when its all done. I will hand load and start with the 180 Grn. ELDX bullet, and try to get a safe and reproducible load of 2900 to 2950 FPS. Take it back to Bang Steel Shooting School and shoot at 1000 yards and try for the painted rock at One Mile. Last point, The discussion regarding "is the 7mm PRC a "Better " cartridge than the older 7mm Rem Mag?" To that question I must say " I don't Know". I don't have a dog in that fight, so I am basing my personal decision simply on the fact that 7 mm PRC factory rifles have the faster rate of twist allowing them to shoot a 180 to 190 grn. bullet , with some degree of precision, over long distances. Nothing against the 7mm Rem Mag, or the 7mm Weatherby Mag. Both well proven , excellent big game rounds. I however, just want to hit steel targets , far away. I think the right Rifle chambered in 7mm PRC /with the right scope / and the right load, will allow me to do that............... Probably !

I was gonna ask you if you got it back Phil. Good Velocity-how is the accuracy?
It's been very good with the reduced loads, so far out to 300. Most between 2700-2750fps.
In just a few more rounds I'm going full power.
Well I did shoot some at 500, several groups in the 3.5" range. So far the #4 seems more relaxed than the 3.
I feel like I'm about 5 grains from Max.

As I said word on the street, I didn't say 7 rem mag was faster either, that's your assumption. I'm saying factory as printed on the box 3k fps and only achieved 2800fps on average. I have 300 wm and 7 rm. Hand loads I'm sure you can get more velocity. It doesn't bother me if you get your velocities or not. Why would I need to look at saami spec. Never said it wasn't accurate, secret it's a precision rifle cartridge. Read what I said, don't jump to conclusions. Keep your hair on and have a great day.
Mmmm I don't believe I had anything to say about anything you said.

If you actually read my posts they're rather straight forward.
1. Hornady's velocity claims and consistency of velocity of their ammo is not based in reality.
2. Hornady never claimed the 7PRC had more velocity than the 7RM
3. SAAMI spec'd 7PRCs are ballistically superior to SAAMI spec'd 7RM. This is an indisputable fact. The difference may not be much to most people or relevant to most people but it's fact.
4. You can build a custom 7RM that is equivalent to a 7PRC
5. The point of the 7PRC was to have factory rifles built at SAAMI specs to get these benefits without having to go custom and be able to buy factory ammunition.

I really don't see how any of these points are upsetting to you. They are simple, straightforward and correct.

Had a custom 7RM that didn't perform the way I wanted, so I rebarreled to a 300WM and have loved it. Built a 7PRC (24" barrel} knowing full well what I could expect performance wise. 3 boxes of factory 175 ELDX to break in barrel verified drops at 2950FPS. Handloads with 175 Bergers shoot to literally the same POI out to 1000. I didn't build a rifle to shoot factory ammo. I'm a little surprised at the number of people on a long range forum that are relying on factory ammo. I get it, but the only way would be to purchase enough ammo of the same lot to shoot until your barrel was toast. And if you don't like the results you get from factory ammo, then now is the time to start reloading. I enjoy the process of finding a good load and the pride of using it to kill something. We are kinda getting to where we want an easy button that I can just buy results in a box and if it doesn't work then I'm going to complain. To be clear I never bought into the Hornady hype, but I am getting exactly what I expected. I had a long talk with my gunsmith because mine was the first he built. I told him that people were going to be beating down his door to build one or rebarrel a 7RM mag to PRC. I told him exactly what the PRC would do and when people wanted one he made sure they were very clear what they were getting. I knew people were thinking they were going to get something that was going to run circles around a 7RM and I didn't want them coming back to him and complaining. A few clients decided to stay with the 7RM or go a different route. The ones who went ahead with the PRC have been happy. Oh, yeah I'm a rebel because I only went with a 1in 9" barrel because I will never shoot heavier then a 175grn bullet. I believe the lack in velocity we're seeing with the Hornady ammo is they have changed powder at least three times now. I pulled a bullet from a factory round and my buddy did the same and they were two totally different powders. I'm not an expert so I couldn't begin to tell you what powders were in there. Just another reason to handload, then you know what is going in. Apologies if anything I said is offensive. I'm not trying to be or judge. I try to help and support others. Most of my friends shoot factory ammo and it's good enough for what they do.
I'm only referring to factory, most people are running factory. People I know of have been trying factory and it is falling short. I never use factory for obvious reasons. The PRC is always compared to the 7mm mag. If I was to get another 7mm it will be a 28 Nosler with suitable tolerances and twist. Not offended at all. My go to at present is a 270 wsm. The pee pee comparison is in jest as what the PRC is mostly compared with is the 7rem mag, I think the PRC would be a good cartridge if you hand load for it and seat it out long. My comment on why the falling short of velocity is powder change for what ever reason I find it comical if true that no one from manufacturer has enlightened the consumer. Enjoy the rest of your day, it's mid afternoon here, so a bourbon and cigar are in order.

Laughable…next you'll tell me your production SEEKINS rifle is a custom…

It's laughable that people with quality barrels and proper chambers are getting advertised velocities? Why, because it doesn't support what you have decided to believe?

No my Seekins rifle isn't a custom rifle, but I chose it over putting together a custom with a Origin and a Proof CF prefit which I could have done for about the same price as my Element cost. Seekins makes **** good barrels and before they made their own they used Rock Creek barrels. They're on the faster side, my 18" 6ARC gas gun from them is only 115fps slower than the box velocity that's also tested with a 24" which tracks to less than 20fps/inch loss.

Guess what? I don't care for your beliefs…

I saw a video a while back of someone comparing 3 different lots of Hornady Precision Hunter ammunition. They broke one round down from three different boxes of ammo and showed what appeared to be three different type/size of powder grains. The powders reportedly looked like RL26, H1000 and Stabil HD. They shot and chrono graphed the three different lots with the kinds of velocity variation you'd expect. Stabil HD was by far the slowest with RL26 the fastest.
I guess it is possible the ammunition came from times with serious powder shortages and Hornady just wanted to sell ammunition. I wish I could find the video and post it. It suggests to me that the wide variation in reported factory ammunition for the 7 PRC maybe the result of the ammo more so than the rifles (excluding barrel length).

In my case, I got a 7 PRC because I didn't have a 7 mm. If I was already set up for 7mm RM and the rifle I liked that wasn't barreled for heavies, I'd have it re-barreled to a tighter twist rather than start over with the 7 PRC.

Within reason, I'm not overly concerned with what is the maximum velocity I can push out of the muzzle. All my hunting rifles with lighter contour barrels seem to shoot better with something below maximum velocity. I'm interested in what velocity my rifle tells me it likes to get 1/2 MOA or better with a good ES/SD. My Seekins Element seems to like the velocities a little under 2900 fps best for the 175 EH.
Just so happen to stumble across this video last night

Its new and all the PRCs have had a lot of publicity but for about 100fps gain is not worth buying a new rifle if you have a 7 mag or for that matter a 300 mag that shoots good. This is only my opinion. If you do not have either it would be worth looking at but still not sold depends on availability of components and chamber and barrel life.

They dont use cannister powders that we can buy. They buy powder in bulk.
That's common regurgitated misinformation. They are using the same powders that you and I can buy off the shelf.

The first lots of ammo produced by Hornady that we received as part of the development team was loaded with Alliant Reloader 26 and it met the speeds quoted on the box. It shot well also. Hornady sent us the load data with the ammo, brass, reamers, and gauges long before the cartridge was released to the public. I was shooting/hunting with one before I was ever allowed to speak about it.

Look guys, Hornady is feeling the crunch with powder and primers just like the rest of us. They can't get what isn't there. When the 7 PRC was originally developed, it was done with a powder that is in limited supply. Probably not the best idea, but here we are.

Hundreds of thousands of ammo boxes and labels were printed before some unfortunate supply shortages took place.
