Savage rifles ... the most accurate out-of-the-box ?

My very first deer rifle was a Savage 111 in .270 Winchester when I was 26 and just learning to hunt with my friends. I didn't grow up hunting and only had a model 25 Marlin .22 from the time I was 10 until I bought that Savage, so my learning curve was steep and that Savage was priced right for a guy who didn't know the difference between a $300 rifle and a $10k rifle. And it came with a scope...and shot Remington Core-Lokt ammo under MOA...all for about $300. I shot many deer and hogs with that rifle before I decided I liked the aesthetics and bolt feel of the Rem700. Out of the box, the Savage required nothing and my seasoned hunting buddies were beyond impressed with how well it shot. I kind of miss that rifle now. I have several Remingtons now that I love but all have required work to get to shooting where they are now. I've made very good friends with my gunsmith as a result, so I'm thankful for that.

Still, the Savage tugs at my heart a bit from time to time, so I just bought another one- .338 Lapua 110 FCP with the HS Precision stock. If it's half as accurate as that old .270win was, I'll be beyond happy with it.

You'll bbe HAPPY with you're .338.
My friend owns one, and its stupid accurate.
Enjoy.

I just unboxed it about an hour ago. Wow. I've always thought Savages were fugly, but this one I actually like- probably because of the stock and my familiarity with HS from my Rem700 rifles.

The thing is built like a tank, with very good attention to detail. Yet, it's relatively light at roughly 10 pounds. For a heavy 26" barrel (fluted) with another 2" or so of muzzle brake, 5 round mag, 1 piece pic rail, and a heck of a solid HS stock, I'm very pleased and surprised it weighs so little. The best part- I measured the trigger pull...untouched by me, straight out of the plastic wrap, it was 1.75 pounds. I thought I messed something up so I tried it again 3 more times. 1.75 pounds!!! My factory Remington triggers that are "set to 3.5 pounds at the factory" have never pulled less than 5 pounds on that gauge. I'll say it again...1.75 pounds!

Not sure what the price is now, but I picked this up for $875 shipped at buds on Wednesday and it arrived today. At that price, I probably should have bought two. I can't wait for my dies and Lapua brass to show up next week....I love my Remingtons and have several, but I'm probably going to catch hell from the Rem crowd now because I really like this rifle. Haven't shot it yet, but so far all indications are looking good. Fortunately, I have components coming next week and I picked up a couple of boxes of S&B to get me by until I do some load dev. Tomorrow I'll be attaching my ATACR F1 just to get the full picture of how bada$$ this thing is and an idea of total package ready to hunt/shoot weight.

Told ya. Grab yourself some rl33, and you're on your way.
You'll find it easy to load for, and his isn't fussy at all. That round is no joke. Pure BADASS!
Thank goodness for the brake!

I also have a TBAC Ultra 338 in jail waiting for forms to clear, so that'll help too.

BTW- I just checked Buds...I must have hit their site at the exact moment some glitch happened. I got the rifle for $875 shipped and the price is now back up to $1,259. I'm just going to take that as a sign that I was meant to own this rifle.

I really have no hard loyalty to any brand even though I typically like the Remington 700..... But seeing that rifle makes me want one. I do like the looks of Savage rifles and the few I've owed have all been very accurate. I really have no need for a 338 size caliber for my hunting mostly in the deep South, but I can definitely see it being a fun rig. I've been eyeing the same gun in 300 win in the HS stock. Let us know how it shoots.

JP, Nice rifle. The savages are looking better or we are getting used to them. Is that the stock mag and can you get a smaller one?
That is a 5 round mag that came with the rifle from the factory. I did a little searching online over the last couple days I think they also make a 3 round, but not a 10 round that I can tell. The 5 rounders aren't cheap- a tad over $100 each depending on where you shop, but with this cartridge, not much appears to be cheap.
