Vectronix Terrapin arrived today!

Shumba , that is impressively small . I bet that Leica and others will back engineer and soon be using whatever Laser Diode ,etc . is in that Unit . Tricstr ....forget the Signs ....what is the Range out to that real life horse or cow just to the upper left of the 65 Sign ?
 
SWFA is giving me 400 on trade-in allowance for my Newcon RF, so it's gone and i'm just gonna bite the bullet and get one of these things. couldn't get a reading on a nice buck this year around 900. it cost me the buck.
 
I measured my old Lieca 1200,sq. and it was 4x4 1/8x 1 1/2'', so that unit is quite compact, the mil reticule would be some what helpful for spotting, mil scope,which I use
 
So is this the PLRF05 that you guys are getting? I have to know one thing for certain before I send the money; does read distance line of sight or does it have an inclinometer build in and can it do the math and give me the adjusted distance? I figured now that some of you have your hands on them, I would be able to find out for sure.

I asked the question a while ago on the Hide and nobody seemed to know for sure. I need to know before I pull the trigger. I know the PLRF10 and up models do, but I have three kids in college....can't justify those models at all!

I emailed Alina Hussey [email protected] of Vectronix with just that question. The PLRF05 does not have an inclinometer so the reading you get is simple line of sight distance. For all the power this unit possesses, I have decided to go with the G7 BR2 Unit. I have been reading every review I can find on it, have spoken with Arron Davidson and a couple of other guys using them, and everyone tells me it can range a rock the size of a 50 gallon drum, or a deer, out to 1200 yards in direct sunlight. That capability, coupled with the ballistic calculations has convinced me to try that one.
I really like the range the Vetronix unit is getting, but packing around a weather station and PDA for calculations is too much equipment and time involved putting the shot together. I want to simplify!

I have been using the PLRF10 for quite some time now. I always use it in line of sight mode. I have never changed it for an angle shot. As distances increase, angle of shot decreases making the corrections minimal. For the shorter high angle shots I simply use either the AIC on the scope ring of my rifle or the "shoot angle" feature in the "shooter" program and aim my phone at the target. It is then automatically inputted into the shooting solution. The shooter program is a real value at $10 and has greatly helped with increasing my affective range.

If you feel you will be doing any extended long range shooting I would choose the Vectronix plrf05 for its ranging capabilities, if you are only hunting and not going past 1000 yards very often then the G7BR2 might be a more appealing choice. I hope to be field testig a G7 soon. I need to do some of my own testing for my own satisfaction.

The Vectronix looks like a really great unit. I want to be able to shoot to 1200, so am thinking the G7 should do the job. I have an ACI, but honestly don't have enough experience with it to guage it's accuracy. I want to shoot rock chucks out there, so need solutions that are whistle pig accurate, not just elk accurate.
 
what i really want to know is how far they will range a coyote . tried leics swaro etc etc . bought them all would love a finder that could range a dog from 500- over a thousand . We have huge fields out here and they just stand there for ever and let you set up but Iam sick of milranging them as our dogs are anywhere from 15 -28 inches . not super accurate but it gets you there . Most of our dogs stand arounf that 500-1000 mark and if you could range them with this im in .
 
I've got a couple of days off now and plan on doing some distance and beam divergence testing. I have a taxidermied coyote that I plan on seeing what kind of distances can be reached. I also will check some deer out. Friend also got one at the same time so I should be able to get some input from him also.
He used his yesterday to set up a 1783 yd shot at a rock.
 
Today I recieved a Vectronix Terrapin that was ordered several weeks ago. I have not had much time to play with it but had to range something. Looked through the manual and found how to set the units to YARDS. Took it out front of my office and found the furthest object I could see, A cell tower wayyyyyy out there. 2139 yards, resting on the bed of my truck. NICE very impressed.

A solid well built high end feeling and looking piece of optical goodness and very compact compared to what I asessed from pictures. it literally is a 4"x4"X1 3/4" thick piece that will easily fit in a jacket pocket. Can not wait to get up in the caprocks and stretch the legs on this thing. Just had to share my joy!

Mine came in earlier this week! Love it!!! 3,000+ yard readings no problem!
 
3000 yards, Cool. But I do wonder, of what value is a 3K yard reading? I was ranging rocks today out to a couple yards short of a mile with my G7 BR2. The ballistic solutions this unit gives have been spot on out to the 1156 yards I have taken marmots at so far this year. These quick solutions are far more useful to me than a yardage capability I won't use, then measuring and entering yardage and atmospheric data into a computer.
Okay, Okay, so the G7 only gives solutions out to 1400 yards. When I start to shoot beyond that distance I'll have to start carrying the small computer, but at least all my atmospheric information will still be read by the rangefinder.
Not intending to **** in your Wheaties, I just find the features of the G7 to offer much greater speed than when I was doing it the old way.
 
Wow! I have been thinking about the Terrapin also. I had the Lieca and now have both the Swaro RF and RFB's. These seem to be the best for my uses. I had not found any thing to out perform them to this point. However, that was just me comparing them to the 2 sets of Lieca's I once owned.

I will be headed on two antelope hunts next month and I hope they shine, but if the Terrapin is a much better unit, I will get one. Looking to range animals, deer, antelope and elk out to 1200 yards. That G-7 also sounds interesting, but I had really not heard much on it.

Brad, I am glad the G7 is working for you, it is a great unit with in its limits as long as one is aware of the short comings of the large beam. What the Vectronix units offers is, reading way out there and realiability. When we report readings to 3000 yards it is not like we are milking the unit to get there. My PLRF10 will bang out readins like lightning. Way way faster than a G7. You would have to use both to understand. The G7 will be faster in most cases to 1000 or 1200 using its program options. But be assured the distances it gives you are ballpark distances. You will see this one of these days I am sure. I am not saying it is not affective, it will get the job done just fine as long as the user is careful to make sure it is on the actual target. But the G7 and the Vectronix are two different animals. For the average hunter to 1000 the G7 is a great choice. For the hunter that demands accurate distances to 1400 or beyond the Vectronix plain spanks the G7's ***. They both are good for two different uses. But in no way is the G7 better at ranging targets.

I have the Bushy Fusion 1600arc 12X50 bino's here and ranged a black cow at just over 1600yds the other day. At under a grand thats not to bad either.
