300 Weatherby Mag. vs. 300 Ultra Mag. vs. 300 WSM

Which of these calibers would be the better round? Mostly for sheep, deer and elk. Most shooting would be no longer that 700 yards.

Merely from the stand point of power. they are the 300 Ultra Mag, 300 Weatherby and the 300
WSM. If you have a long action the 300 Ultra Mag would be my choice.

If You want/have a short action the WSM would be the way to go.

There is nothing wrong with the 300 Weatherby eather but it is in between the WSM and
the RUM.

Ultimately the 300 rum can be loaded down to 30/06 velocities all the way up to some major
velocity and power.

The 300 WSM cannot be loaded as hot as eather the RUM or the 300 Weatherby.

I love my .300rum but if my limit was 700yds I would consider the wsm due to the availability of better quality brass.

my choice would be the .300 Weatherby seven days a week and twice on Sunday. I know a lot of guys that went thru the Ultra mag thing, and few if any could really make it group as well as they wanted. Maybe now, but not for the first two or three years the round was out there. Still my choice would be none of the above! I'd go with a .308 Norma mag, or an 8mm Remington mag case necked down to .308 to give me something very close to a .300 Ackley; which by far is the best of all the big three hundred mags

It just depends. All three are awesome rounds in their own right. The 300 WSM will be the easiest to find ammo for. You can not go wrong with any of them.

i own one each 300win 300 wsm, 300 wby and 300 ultra and if i could keep only one it would be the 300wby.

I really love my 300 win(long) in my browning a-bolt, but the rum has around a 10% edge in raw power and if you can learn the rifle well enough it'll punch 1" groups at 200 yards all day in a non-braked sporter. The roy and 300 wsm are great rounds but I'll take my 300 win(long) and 300 rum all day, any day.

With the advent of newer slower burning powders, the 300 win, 300 wby and 300 rum really aren't that far apart with the slight edge going to the 300 rum with very heavy bullets. That being said, I have a rum that is a semi custom gun with a factory tube and it is very easy to load for and easy to shoot. It is my little gun and usually gets the call for antelope, but my 338 rum is my go to gun and the 300 rum is my backup.

I have a 300 WSM and a 300 RUM. My RUM is has a heavy 32 inch barrel and is strictly for long range. My 300 WSM is my carry gun for deer and elk is very accurate and is capable of 700 yard shots. I think the 300 Weatherby and 300 RUM can have shorter barrel life if loaded close to max loads.

For a carry rifle for sheep, deer, and elk out to 700 yards. A 300 WSM all the way.

I have loaded for both the WSM and RUM. With 67.5 gr of RL17 and 180 E-Tips I can get an honest 3200 fps in the WSM. With 98 gr of Retumbo and 180 E-Tips I can get 3400 fps. 30 gr more powder for an additional 200 FPS. That said, RL17 is the only powder you'll come close to 3200 fps with a 180 bullet in the WSM. 3000 - 3050 is going to be top end with other powders.

For 700 yd and less shooting, I would definitely pick the WSM but I would do it in a long action. I have loaded for the WSM in a short action and in order to load longer high BC bullets most efficiently, you won't be able to load them in the mag box.

have long felt that the order should be .300WSM, .308 Norma mag, and then the .300 WBY mag. They all are pretty good with sub 200 grain bullets, but when you start talking 220 grain and bigger bullets the Weatherby moves up to another level. The .300 Ackley, .300 Jarrett, and even the Baer are all WBY mag clones in the end. Accuracey wise, the .300WSM is very good, but so are the Ackley, Jarrett, and WBY mags. Barrel wise the Weatherby and it's clones are by far the best. If the Ultra mag was a great round we'd see it in use at the 1000 yard meets. Instead it's the WSM, Ackley and the WBY mags
