What brand of rifle is it? If custom what barrel make? Maybe you went over this already but I missed it if you did.

OP here. Good feedback for the most part. I have some 203 HHT at home but based on what I heard and learned I think that I might focus on the 182HHT as it is shorter and less likely to tumble on game.
I wanted this thread to focus on this particular bullet so I only shared the short story of my first ever elk hunt. I'm so relieved that I got the elk as the hunt continued on as these two shots did not finish him soon enough. After much much effort I was finally able to finish him with a 40 yard shot.
Next time I'll probably be rockin with the 182gr HHT. And, I'll make my shot placement a little better.

Factory X-bolt Pro. Factory 8 twist. ADG brass. 80.4 H1000, CCI mag. Great gun. Great cartridge, and accurate (precise) bullet.
Get the HHTs yes, but cared for correctly and without any branches in the way all of the Hammer bullets are not prone or likely to tumble in game. Once the first shot is sent there is a lot that can go on until the elk is permanently down, my guess is it would be very easy to miss seeing a branch along a 500+ yard path during a second followup shot as your stressing to anchor a large animal like an elk. My guess is something deflected the bullet before impact and/or the meplat was damaged somewhere along the way.
Congrats on the successful elk hunt most of all.
You should still check your barrel twist with a cleaning rod just to know for sure. I've had two fierce rifles in 7lrm that had 8 twist barrels so I was told. Well after several issues I ended up checking and they were actually a 10 twist and a 9 twist when I checked and a gun smith verified.
The 182 hht is a good choice that's what I ended up shooting in my custom 300 prc 84.3 grains of h1000 cci 250 and lapua brass.

If it wasn't for all the drama that always follows, I'd agree.
I do think it'd be interesting to have a "bullet failure" thread but not bullet specific. Without the drama, it'd be a great learning tool for all of us.

I'm certainly interested, as are most of those using Hammer. As a group very interested in what happens, to the point of trying to make them fail. We're mostly bullet diggers, with an interest in seeing internal damage, as we are basic hero shots.
It can be tough to ask questions on the interweb, and not make it seem an interrogation.
This thread could be the first entry. Hammer bullet fails where OP cited 1.5" entry hole validating deflected bullet.

I don't know about other threads. My sarcasm isn't always obvious but my point was this thread didn't prove the bullet failed.
