I have a 6.5 CM with 24" barrel being cut and threaded to 18" for suppressor, 8 twist. Setting this gun up for Deer to about 500yds max. and shortening up for easier movement in brush and blinds. Thinking of giving hammers a try again. Would you use HH or AH and what powder for 18" barrel? I have varget, staball, IMR 4166, IMR 4955.

I am shooting 110 hammer hunter with staball 6.5 out of a 20". Running about 2975

I think staball would give me some added speed but worried about not burning up all powder and it being in can!

Thats good to know. I have 8lbs of staball. And 4lbs of varget. Brian did you try a AH? Just wondering if the speed they claim you can pickup holds to short barrels too?

Haven't tried them yet. Thinking of ordering some of the 85 hh. Been looking for some 97 ah hammer data but haven't found anything yet

I couldn't get decent velocity out of staball with heavier bullets and stopped using it. It three different rifles it was always slower than anything published. RL16 has been my best powder but I'm using 129 and 143gr bullets.

Short barrel and hammers will need faster powder than normal. With the HH I'd run the 110 or 124 with a faster powder and I'd lean towards the 110 as I like them running with high velocity. Maybe try Varget and 4166 as they are faster burning powders and you should get complete burn in the 18" barrel. Some of the slower powders may work but I bet they will run VERY dirty. Good luck.

Call Hammer and talk to Steve.

I PM'ed him. He didn't have anything for 18" barrels. Referred me to the load data sheet on this site. But no data there for 18" or powders I have on hand. There is one with 20" and one of the powders I have, so I can start with that I guess.

What I was hoping to find out are people really seeing a speed increase with the AH's over the HH's and does that hold true with shorter barrels?
