Is the 243 the best whitetail deer cartridge?

I have.

Have you ever killed one with a 338 Federal?

Edit to add...I have a Sako in .243. I am comparing terminal effects to 338 federal just to keep it in the .308 wildcat family.
I've followed more blood trails with a deer shot with a 243 than any other cal I can think of bad bullet choice with placement on bone won't leave a exit hole so no blood trails then I've seen them drop in there tracks it's a matter of knowing the cartridge limitations it's not a magic cartridge I have one love it but load it so it will perform even with a bad shot placement there are better choices but they do have there place among young and recoil sensitive shooters

If the 260 Rem would have had followed the 6.5 Swedes twist rate already proven over a 100 yrs ago the 6.5 Creed would not be in existence the only fault of the 260 was the standard 1-9 twist same as the 264 win mag the 6.5 Creed was just a reinvention of the whell
Remington killed the 260 by marketing it as a hunting cartridge - a really crowded market with no real glaring holes. If they had marketed it as a long range precision cartridge like the Creedmore was marketed (and agreed, with the right rate of twist), it would have won the privilege of being the most hated cartridge 🤣 The PRS community tried to hand Remington a gold wrapped gift many times by touting how good the 260 was at long range shooting, but Remington proved once again how out of touch they were with the average firearm consumer.

.243 Win, designed about 1955, about 66 YO, extremely popular for any number of reasons, including ability to kill deers. I like 80-85 solid copper bullets in mine for deers, but I quit shooting deers some time ago. Best to get an 8 twist. Does real good on rodents with 87 Vmax's. Lots of hits on rodents at 400 with some just under 800.

Well i bet anyone could follow this bloodtrail. This was a cull shot with my tikka t3 243 last year in west tx after a rare snnow.

I'm personally bonded to the 270 Winchester as the best whitetail round. But that's fully acknowledging the subjectivity of this and the reasons people developed other cartridges since the .270 came out (way before that newfangled 243 🤣).

It wasn't what I took my first deer with but it is what the rifle my mom and dad bought me when i was 14 was chambered in (cuz they didn't have any .30-06 chambered savage 111s in the store at the time and we weren't leaving empty handed…best "compromise" ever!) and it's what I've taken the most game with. I know full well it doesn't do anything about 3 dozen other cartridges don't do pretty much the same…that being said I don't know if too much improvement can be made on the original 270 as an all purpose deer cartridge, especially out of a 22 inch barrelled sporter weight rifle that doesn't kick too much for beginning shooters like I was to learn to shoot well with. It really does occupy a ballistic sweet spot to my mind, the boring old 130 soft point at 3000-3200 fps may be very old news at this point but it's deadly as all get out.

I own a 300 Winnie, a 270 and a 243 and must say I really do see a difference moving up the cartridge power levels, especially between the 243 and the 270. I fully acknowledge the 300 as totally unnecessary and possibly ridiculous but I like that rifle and just use it for pretty much everything now and it certainly doesn't waste any more meat than the 243 or .270 in my experience, despite the claims of such by those who have never even shot a .30 caliber magnum of any kind.

Anyways, I would argue the .270 as a much better all situations whitetail round than the .243, and I own and use both. Bearing in mind I live in northern Saskatchewan, so these are significantly bigger bodied, thicker skinned, thicker fur, more "ready for winter" subcutaneous fat kind of deer than the warm-weather Texas whitetails mentioned above.

I suppose it depends on the size of the deer, and maybe the range or distance involved - not that the .243 Win is inadequate, but there are better choices when the deer are big or the shots long.

I'm not as worldly, or storied as some of the members here, but in my experience the .243 win was at its best shooting feral goats in Australia, out to about 600m or so

For Whitetail, I'm partial to the .280 Rem/AI, but 6.5x284 might edge it out - right behind 30-30 Win as the greatest WT round of all time!

I must say the .243 always impresses me.
It the the round I recommend to
All new shooter and hunters cause it's light recoil, easy to learn, and ability to hunt such a wide array of stuff. I own one of the few ranges in the area that reaches more than 200 yards. So lots of new shooters ask for advice, I always say .243. Heck it really shocks me when older hunters come to me saying they want a rifle for deer out to 300 and they look at me like I'm stupid when I tell them the 6.5 creed although threat and my personal rooms I use is not the best for them because they buy the cheapest scope and won't dial up.
In fact my shooting buddy still
Uses his .243 and takes all kinds of game.

My first centerfire rifle was a Remington 7400 in .270 Win. My dad got it for me as a Christmas present when I was 11. It's produced plenty of bang flops on whitetail over the years. I love .270 Win.
