Explain the need for a 28 Nosler

What does need have to do with it? If I only purchased a rifle because of need, I'd only have 1 rifle, and what's the fun in that? How many hundreds of thousands of jobs could/would be eliminated if we only purchased from need, instead of desire.

The 28 is just the new fad in speed with heavy for caliber bullets. The release of the 195 Berger was a game changer, and really where the 28 Nosler shines. Seat them way out in a standard length LA, stuff a ton of powder under them, and go torch a barrel. In a hunting rifle that sees 10-20 rounds a year, could last 20-50 years. But who wants to trick out a rifle and then stick it in a safe???

Lance nailed it! But I believe the fad rifles are the rage because I have several safes filled with them, the 7's you listed were at one time the fad of that day. Most of them come and go but I think the 28 Nosler is here to stay. In it's day the 300 RUM was the rage for the same reasons. Fun chasing the FADS. Rick

I actually bought a Nosler Mountain in 28 Nosler because at the time it was the only clambering in 7mm I felt comfortable Elk hunting with. No regrets, it was purchased as a purpose built hunting rifle.

SAAMI debate is somewhat a shallow one I think. Especially with factory ammo. Early on for each of these 7's the SAAMI spec was weak/wrong. 7rum ( at least mine) from Remington had huge amount of freebore so much so that it was a futile effort to get any bullet/ powder combo to shoot good. 1/2 moa or under is the GOOD mark. Barrel was toasted in 800 rounds. Not that it was any good to begin with. But that's factory.
I'm not much to stay with SAAMI chambers anyway. It serves as a start for me to improve on. It's why I only have 1 rifle in my stable with a SAAMI (30-30). All are modified or wildcats.
I too am a 7mm fan. My 3 are 7saum, 28 Nosler and 7rbh.
I've never had a 7stw. When I was struggling with the 7rum years ago I set out to find/create/improve on a 7mm. I was totally consumed and committed with the endeavor for 10+ Years so I have a biased veiw in many regards on this subject.
I lost objectivity long ago.

Nosler made all of these 26,28, and 30 Noslers in an attempt to get Hornady to make a 6.5 PRC, 300 PRC, and I'm sure soon we will see a 7mm PRC.

28 Nosler was born From the 26 nosler. So company had the cartridge and decided to try other options. The main advantage over STW and RUM is it will fit in a standard (30-06)long action. And it seems to have better barrel life for a very similar velocity. Taking that into consideration, it's Gonna be my next rifle. Why? Because I just want one! there are all kinds of calibers to choose from and there are advocates and opposers to all. It's not a wise choice as I already have 7-08 and 7mm rem mag. They both perform above my capabilities but I just want a new toy.

Have a 26" 28 Nosler barrel on the way from Shilen. Do I need it? No. I love my 280AI and 7MM cartridges in general but the added velocity and bullet weight potential was too good to pass up. I own a 300WSM and 338Win which I really enjoy both but think the 28 Nosler with 7MM projectiles will outperform

Always interested In new cartridges and there benefit to the shooting world.

I would like a debate or a good explanation for the need or advantage of this cartridge over what we already have.
Please keep it civil and educational. I have seen and heard some say it is the top performer for 7 mm. Opinions welcomed.

The closets factory rivals to it are the 7 STW and the 7 mm RUM. The only reason for the so called supper mags I'll call them is for the bullets heavier than the 180s. Like the 195 grain Berger or even the Alco bullets. Those bullets are amazing and amazingly high. Their 195 grain bullet has a .932 G1 B.C. They used to make a 205 grain and a 215 grain bullet in 7mm. I don't know if they stoped making them or not. A 7 RUM spitting out 215 grain ALCO around 3050 FPS with a G1 B.C. Around 1.3 would be a dream round.

I have a Remington Model 700 Sendero in 7 Mag. I've loaded some 180 grain Berger's at 3050 FPS. In my opinion there is no need for the 28 Nosler. As you mentioned we all ready have the 7mm STW and 7mm RUM. We even have the 7mm Weatherby.

When your out in the wilds. Will the local shops have the Ammo?
A 280AI will shoot 280 ammo and get you out of a bind.
I would stick with 280AI
Felt recoil, muzzle blast effect accuracy, can I shoot it and have fun or do I feel hammerd when finished target shooting?

Another question.
Even though speed is not the only criteria for long range hunting, it is important and cartridges that handle the biggest bullets seem to have an advantage for this sport. Magazine length has never been a problem for me and in my opinion a 4" mag will do anything I want.

I have owned about every factory 7 mm known to man and many wildcats. except the 28 Nosler
and was just wondering what reasonable velocities I could expect from the 28 using 195 grain bullets ?

Getting 3050 with no problem on an xbolt. It fits in mag and is .020 off lands at 3.680 overall with current lot of 195's. Been busy with the farm so haven't spent a lot of time at the range. I think I can probably get it to 3100 with no problem just want to find the sweet spot.

There is no way I am giving up my 280ai and it is my go to for long range target shooting Iver my 6.5 creedmoor. That being said still wanted the 28 nosler for grins. A simply barrel change and not too much of a barrel, dies, and brass investment

I am also shooting a 280 AI and the 28 Nosler is a dedicated Bear and Elk rifle.
