Sig wins contract with the 277 fury

Suppose we get a .540 bolt face magnum sized case with around 100gr h2o capacity with the steel bolt head. Running a projectile in a 26" @ 80kpsi.

There are barrel treatments and materials to combat throat erosion. I think you will also have to consider that easily removable barrels will likely be the way to go for the Fury as opposed to the classic screwed on action type of barrel.

so what kind of treatments and or materials are out for use to help combat throat erosion for lets say a bolt gun ?

There are a lot of pages in this and I may have missed something , but, I'll bet the Weatherby Throat will become a popular addition for the 277 Fury if it catches on.
I remember a DI showing us that the M14 recoil was nothing to be concerned about by firing it with the butt against his chin, 9-10 Lb rifle. Yeah , he did that ! ! I just saw an article on the Sig Cross which is supposed to be chambered for this round. Weight 6.4 lb. Don't think I would care to see that shot with the butt against anybody's chin.

Then there is the cartridge construction:

I would say that there isn't a treatment to make a significant difference in throat erosion on the current barrel steel that we have.

Sig has really expanded their product base over the past 5 years or so and obviously the military is head over heels for sig.

sig said they will offer the ss head/2 part brass for reloading at a later date--they also stated that they do use a "proprietary" (I assume that means they have a patent on it) barrel treatment that significantly increases barrel life over non-treated barrels--barrel life will be released once the MIL contract is decided, until then its a "secret" as are the exact specs of the cartridge

notice they say "treatment" not coating--to me that sounds more like a nitride type of process--maybe something like cobalt? just guessing--but I'm assuming they have improved on it somehow also

they have applied through saami for this cartridge, so it will be open source for all ammunition manufactures to have ammo for it and also any rifle manu that wishes to chamber a rifle in this caliber will be an option too--the hard part for the ammo companies will be the 2 part case--it takes $, and tooling--SIG said right now the SS bases are machined but they are looking into other processes in the future to make production faster and less expensive

not heard about who will offer dies for it yet though

It would be wise for them to set up the saami chamber with a generous throat. The extra throat will not be significantly detrimental to the typical accuracy of a belt fed machine gun but it would be helpful in selling bolt action rifles & ammo set up for long heavy projectiles

accept they are using aics style detachable poly mags for their CROSS if rumors are correct- this will limit the OAL you can load to in their platform

1. there is no evidence that this cartridge cannot be reloaded just swags.
2. Nitriding has a proven record of greatly increasing barrel life. I'm too bored to repost for the THIRD time the indisputable evidence.
