Kill the wolf?

SSS is kind of a joke because guys think they are going to apply this when they come across a wolf randomly while they are out deer or elk hunting. Random sightings are pretty rare in my experience. And the ones I have had would have been difficult to get a shot off - you have to actually go put some time and effort into hunting them. Most people aren't willing to do that.

If people put the time and effort into filling their 5 wolf tags as they do whining about it on the internet, we wouldnt have as much of a wolf problem.

In WI there are no tags. I can see where SSS would be tough in western states with huge tracts of land. It also doesn't have to be as passive as waiting until one runs past this deer stand either...

Not part of the SSS strategy or maybe even effective to control numbers, but I met a guy in wolf country in WI who had a novel way to keep their coyote dogs safe. They started running a couple pitbulls with their hounds. He said they didn't have very good noses or really even know what they were supposed to be doing, but they would run along. If a wolf showed up they would latch on and the hounds would pile in. Said there wouldn't be much left of the wolf by the time they got there. No more lost dogs.

3s doesn't work and never will. Can't compare wolves to pigs since they are not feral. Pigs will never have the support that wolves do. Only from selfish hunters that don't care about the land owners that have to deal with them and side with the anti hunters to stop the needed controls...Poison.

They are here to stay no matter how much B------g there is about it. Get your 5 tags and hunt them.

We don't see them nearly as much as we used to in our hunting spots. They do bounce in population just like any other predator. Food runs low they fall in numbers, food increases and they rise in numbers. At least I can hunt them if I want. I can't hunt the griz that come to gun shots. They trouble me much more than the wolf.

.......At 20K, it sounds like you were over-populated.....Biologists in Idaho say that wolves account for less than 1% of the total predation of Idaho elk. While cougars account for the largest predation, at only 2%. Life mortality accounts for the biggest loss, as cow elk have achieved a longer life span, and it has come of age.....

So you believe the same department that mismanaged elk, can be counted on to manage the wolves.

2 studies, one in NW Montana, and one in Wyoming documenting the effect of wolves on lions, had them reducing numbers of those achieving adult hood to single digits. Directly killing them, or running them off kills, setting them up for starvation.

Elk calf mortality to wolves is very well documented. Either directly killing them, or forcing miscarriage secondary to stress. Not spending energy to raise calves could conceivably help cows live longer????

I hear all sides of this. If you listen to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the wolves are the epitome of a threat to the whole ecosystem. Western sheep and cattle ranchers will pretty much back that up. We must maintain a balance in the population, or we stand a chance to have another animal go extinct. That cannot happen. I seriously doubt the wolves in the west, will get to the problems caused by feral hogs and coyotes in Texas.
Wolves and people never co-exist very well. In time they will likely only be in the areas unihabited by man.

They took our selway elk herd from mid 20k to less than 3k in short order after being introduced. I hunt way back where we never saw a wolf and game was flourishing. We saw 6 wolves in a spot of ours and didnt see a deer in the 3 days there. The canadian greys werent here in the past and should have never been brought in.

For those in support of the wolves. I'd take a bet 99 to 1 that you live in a town or city. How about we build a fence/wall around your town/city, and introduce wolves there? Trust me, plenty of little yapper dogs and cats to survive on, for a while at least. Then what? See how YOU like having them on your property, and in your back yard. Just saying, they're not a decent animal to live around, and when you Actually have something at stake, your opinions will change.

Once again...if you don't live in it you will not know....
Let's just say.....maybe some of the loss of elk numbers are just displacement...meaning the elk migrate out to never return...one explanation...
Another....elk are not breeding as readily because they are being harassed constantly..by man and wolves...elk numbers have fallen...areas that once held none are now abundant....
Ranchers begging the f&g to do something about all the elk in their crop lands..but still not allowing peolle to shoot to remove some...but even so...the elk know if they go back up in the mountains the wolves will be right on them again.......the elk aren't stupid.......but there are a lot of stupid people.........
Why do the ranchers refuse to allow people to shoot the elk doing damage to their crops??
