Hello all,

I recently purchased a Vortex Viper PST 4-16x50 scope that is going to be mounted on my Winchester model 70 7mm rem mag. I was curious what rings would be recommended for use with this rifle? I was told that the Vortex Pro 30mm low rings would be an option, but I am unsure what mounting height (low, medium, high) I need and if buying the Vortex brand is worth it? Thank you in advance.

I would go with Seekins low, or Burris XTR lows with the inserts.
In all fairness, I don't know if you are running a rail or two piece mounts. Some of the two piece mounts can be very low profile, so double check to see if you will have enough clearance with lows.

I love the Talley Lightweights. I've put them on my last two rigs and they've been great. I like not having a separate base and ring. The ones on my M70 are low height with a 30mm tube & 42 objective. You might need mediums for a 50mm.

For your consideration >>> https://www.burrisoptics.com/mounting-systems/rings/xtr-signature-rings

It comes with inserts that can provide up to MOA of cant should you need it.

Thank you all for you recommendations. I apologize, I should jave clarified what mount I have. I have Weaver style mounts, not picatinny. I'm not sure if any of these recommendations are compatible with mine?

Put an EGW HD aluminum rail on it with the Low TPS TSR-W rings and you'll be good to go.

Len Sells both through the LRH store at a very reasonable price. That's the same setup I run on most of my M70's.

Yes, the mediums should fit well with a 50mm objective.

So, if I want to stay with my current base, just changing the rings, will low rings work? They hold center of the scope 0.87 inches from the base. Now, the mediums hold it 0.97 inches. Which one should meet my clearance needs with the 50mm lense?

That depends on the contour of your barrel and how much actual scope clearance you need or prefer. Some prefer as close as possible, my personal preference is 1/4" to 3/8" similar to therifleman556's post in #4.

I agree, I have found shooting prone, the scope being up a little bit helps my neck pain.

Ok, yes I believe my current 40mm scope is mounted around the same height as therifleman556's. I have just enough clearance to slide my pinky or maybe ring finger underneath the end of the scope and barrel. Is there a way for me to measure to determime what size I need to make the clearance?
