The Good The Bad and The Ugly About Yor 6.5 Sherman Short

Left hand Dave, I'm sure that you're aware, but I didn't see this posted so far& that is that you will also need to buy a full length 7saum die if you don't get a specific form die,and have it shortened, at least for the sst, in order to form you brass prior to resizing the neck. Rich recommends the Redding full length sizer,b/c it fully supports the case when forming the new shoulder as well as its price is less than $30.00 &its performance is excellent. Again that's for the 6.5sst,I'm honestly not sure of the exact differences between the ss& sst.

Rich,

On the SST did you also increase case body taper or just the shoulder angle to 30 degrees? If so what is the taper per inch for both SS and SST?

Just an FYI as gas guns have less extraction leverage than most bolt guns, 0.010/inch still seems to be enough for all but combat level enviornments where full auto and high round counts and lincrease carbon and debris has to be accounted for. Take the 458 socom actually is slightly under with less taper and still does quite well.

The people that have notched the feed ramp how deep did you make the notch and what diameter?

Also I have a Remington SA fitted with a center feed Wyatt's box would the same operation be needed or help in any way?
Thanks again for all the information.
Dave

I estimated the amount needed to be removed by taking a photo with my phone of the bullet tip area that hung up under the lip of the feed ramp when I tried to feed it from the magazine into the chamber, took pic from top with the bolt open. Then after removing the barrelled action from the stock&placing it in bbl vise with mag opening up,I slowly removed material from feed ramp with my dremel using carbide bit...removing a small amount and then placing the tip of the bullet up seeing if it "fit" . Then finished with polishing wheels.I really didn't need to remove much to get the feeding issues to stop. Probably not what's correct, but it has continued to work w/o any FTF's

I wish I was getting the velocities you guys are getting. I've made two 65 SS both with 26" Proof barrels, one steel and one carbon. With 140 ELD's, 140 Berger EH and 143 ELD-X's I'm between 3150 and 3190 with N570 and H1000. R26 gets me a bit over 3200. I've not gotten close to 3250 with any combination. My max loads are 59.9 H1000, 61.9 N570 and 59.2 R26. I was out today at 76 degrees and both the H1000 and N570 loads had some bolt resistance on opening.

My steel barrel is on a Kelbly Atlas and I didn't need to notch the ramp. The carbon is on a Defiance UL and I'll probably need to notch it. I'm running it on a Magpul chassis until my Manners shows up and I'll run it as a BDL for my mountain goat hunt in September.

I've got three Whidden sizing dies. I'm really not happy with any of them. The first one will stick a case every 10 cases or so. I tried every lube out there and nothing stopped it. I polished it with lapping compound and finished with Flitz in the lathe and no change. The second one is much better but the outside threads are very tight in my MEC Marksman press so I use that in the Co-ax so I don't have to thread it. I had Whidden make me one of their click sizing dies because the first two would size very inconsistently. Cases will vary .003" and an occasional .006". With the click die I can adjust the shoulder bump .001" at a time. It works but I still get variation. My testing found it depends on how much lube you use but I still can't get it consistent enough. I just measure all the sized shoulders and group them. The .003" difference shows up on the target at 100 yards.

I've been using Norma brass and, when run hard, pockets open in a couple firings. I found some Bertram 7 SAUM brass and it's much tougher. The primers are actually hard to fit even after two firings. The Bertram brass is about 20 fps slower than the Norma, though.

Regardless of the velocity, both rifles are tack drivers. I don't have targets to show like Mateo but they're darned close.

The Bertram brass holds about 1.6 grs more than Norma. That's your velocity loss. I have had a lot better luck than that with primer pockets in the Norma though? I am having ADG run my primer pockets at minimum spec, so they should be great according to other reports I've heard.

Maybe its just me but it sure seems over the last month there have been 3 or 4 separate reports of unusually slow vel performace and early pressure signs with proof barrels. Probably just coincidence or I couldd be miss remembering.

On the sticking die with headpsace variation sizing. I wonder if the issues are connected. If a spec is off where its tighter lower on the case body but looser higher the leverage in pulling the case out by the press could be plenty to cuase the variation. Otherwise in a fl die what else. about a fl die could create varation in sizing?

As you have tried polishing I would be on the phone with Whidden so they can fix the issue. For me I work off that even the best can put out turds and even more so likely when demand shoots skyward as its done in the last 3 yrs. What I find the most critical is how they handle and address issues once they are reported and given a chance to address. I hope your issues get addressed. I just got a set of very lightly used forming dies made by whidden for improved norma mag parent case and they look great.

Rich,

Do you know if Whidden cuts or uses a reamer to make the sherman line of dies?

They are reamed

If I build on of these this is what I have to be willing to accept. I don't seem to get the same velocities a lot of people report with cartridges. That could be my reloading practices, luck of the draw I don't know but it seems to happen. Curious, Parshal do you normally get the velocities reported with other cases?
