So this is a head scratcher. What cartridge will generate 3200 fps out of a 18-20 inch barrel firing a bullet heavy enough for deer. Wanting the short barrel to make running suppressed easier to handle in the blind and shooting off hand. Please dont suggest 223. Already have 300blk, 450 bushmaster, and 223 in short barrels. Thought about 300wsm with 125 grain bullets.
6.5 RM, .264wm, 6.5 PRC. Running 100-130gr bullets you should be able to hit your goal with either of the first two and at least get close with the third.
 
To each their own, but....why? Obtaining the fps goal is going to push you to low BC bullets in any caliber and negate the ballistic advantage. Yeah, a 300WM/WSM will get you there with 125gr BTs but I wouldn't choose that setup, I'd shoot a more ideal bullet and take my medicine in a fps reduction.

Don't know why you need so much speed to shoot at running deer from in a blind, I would be more concerned with a good caliber and bullet selection. I may not be following what your wanting to do. I guess what I am saying is if it is going to be close range shooting why the need for all the speed?


I must agree with these guys - ??why?? Blind hunting, running deer, short barrel hopped up bullet. . .doesn't make sense. But it can be done and lord knows I've done my fair share of unsensable shooting! I do think the better route would be a better bullet i.e, weight/construction with a little sacrifice in the speed department.
 
From my 6mm-284 files:

First barrel I worked on with my lathe, I rechambered a 20" 243 to 6mm-284. Talk about muzzle flash! I used necked down Winchester 284 brass


Tried Nosler 80 gr ballistic tips. Got the Ballistic Tips to go 3300 with H-1000.

Also shot 51 gr of RL-17 and 87 gr V-max got 3375


I think you could get a 90-95 gr bullet to go 3200 fps easily.
 
6.5 SS would be close with a 120 TTSX, 120 Sierra Pro Hunter, 120, SMK, 123 SMK. Definitely with a 100 TTSX, 107 SMK. or 107 TMK.

I push a 150 SMK @ 3160 from a 25.75" barrel.

During fire forming, I got 3250 from a 127 LRX. I am about to start load development with that bullet, and think 3300 should be possible from my 25.75" barrel.

Yep, and "my personal preference" is the 215 Berger.
 
.243 Win with a Berger 105 and Reloder 26, I ran them at 3,400fps no pressure until 3,450 in a 26" barrel so you should get 3,200 out of an 18"
 
My daughter's 7-08 is running our 131g Hammer Hunters at 3150fps. If I remember correctly. This a short barreled Weatherby vanguard youth rifle. This would be a good option that gets you close to your goals without shooting super light for cartridge bullets or just too small of cal.

Yep she shot her elk and muley with it this year. Still has that terrible trigger too.
