What 300 cartridge.

Thanks for all the suggestions! Went and looked at what was available directly from them and it looks like its only 3 of them 300wm, 300nm, and 300 rum.

I may have missed it, but is the max OAL for the action mentioned anywhere? FWIW, the SAAMI/CIP specs for the LM and NM cartridges have a max COAL 93.5mm (3.681").

edited to add: Just in case they become available to civilians from Black Hills or over-runs, I checked the specs for the Navy's MK 248 MOD1 (300 WM) round: 3.50" OAL with a 220 SMK. Interestingly, the max average chamber pressure is 68,100 psi (3 SD of 78,900, ouch!). But.....but......but.... SAAMI says that's too high! Oh my goodness! <LOL>

I had a lot of other options I was ready to throw out before I read that post. It definitely limited my recommendations.
I understand their barrel conversion kit is proprietary, and I agree their offering is limited, but it is unclear if they will do custom chambering. I am corresponding with Hunter Crew (Customer Support Specialist) to get clarification.

In the meantime, I found a very pricey (from $2450.00) aftermarket Proof Research carbon barrel conversion kit offering in .300 PRC.

I would first buy 3-500 new cases of whatever is available right now to determine which caliber to buy......Then the primers, if WSM then LR primers, if a mag then LRM primers. Then I would know what I had to work towards,,,,Just my 2 cents. RangerWade

If I were looking for a 300, with off the shelf ammo, it would have to be the 300WM. There is NO gun store that will not have 3-5 different loads of 300WM on the shelf. 308 and 30-06 will also be available but with less punch to 1000. In todays world, many of the other "factory" loads will just be empty spots with dust on the shelf.

In your beautiful Dakota Rife with the Triple A Walnut stock, and rust bluing ,300 H and H, which won the 1000 yard Wimbledon Match ( around ) 1910 and has been taking big game for over 100 years. or In your Beautiful Weatherby Mark V, Deluxe 300 Weatherby Mag !! Which had been taking big game for about 80 years. Many Mule Deer and Elk and Big Horn Sheep have fallen to these cartridges . Nothing wrong with the classics. Sorry, no extra letters added to their names. Enjoy whatever you buy.!!

I have to question how many people around here actually shoot long range by some of these recommendations and how they would actually perform at distance with factory ammo.

I've shot ELR a good bit and my favorite for it has been 300WM and IMO it's at the top when talking ELR with factory ammo. I had a 300NM barrel too and I've have several custom RUM's and you really need to load with those. With 300WM even the 190FGMM does alright, it's not the load I'd take to a ELR match but I got hits at 2300 yards with it at Arena and it's not very expensive. At one point I was getting it for about $25/box but I'm sure that's not the case anymore. The Berger 215gr Hybrid ammo does better though, I shot some of that and the 215 is what I loaded and shot a lot of. There are a lot of factory match ammo options for the 300WM.

300PRC has a good bit of factory ammo options out there too and people seem to like it. I don't have any experience with it though so beyond that I can't say one way or another how it performs with factory ammo at distance but I'd consider it.

This keeps getting asked but no one has answered it (or I missed the response):
Max COAL for a Desert Tech SRS is 4"

He's talking about one of these:

From 223 all the way to 338 Lapua. Just a Barrel, Bolt, and magazine swap get's you from mild to wild.

The correct answer is 300 PRC. Just go find a barrel maker that makes it, if the one you're looking at now doesn't. There's a handful out there, you can get whatever you want but for factory ammo, 300 PRC has the right bullet weights/designs for long range. If you can afford to feed it, 300 Norma mag would be great. I just can't image spending $5.00-$7.00+ every time I pulled the trigger on a long range target type gun for range time.

I provided a .300 PRC barrel option in #46.
