weatherby mark V action possibilities

i have a 300 weatherby mag in a mark V action sitting in the corner that i no longer enjoy shooting, it kicked the snot out of me and i added a holland quick discharge muzzle break and the noise is so unbearable that i hate shooting it just as much as i did before adding the break so ive been pondering the idea of a semi custom rifle built on the action...im a 264 win mag freak and have 3 of them so at this point that caliber is out of the equation...im looking for suggestions on what to build and here is a small list of what im looking for
a caliber that does NOT need a muzzle break to shoot it comfortably
fairly flat trajectory
good bullet selction
not horribly expensive as far as components, such as brass to come by and or fire form
i would consider this rifle a "hunting weight" rifle so nothing too heavy
it would be used for deer/antelope/bear and possibly elk
i like the thought of having a 7mm stw but not sure i would like the recoil so fire away with your suggestions

Considering your addiction, how about a 6.5 STW or 6.5-300 Weatherby.

I'm assuming you didn't wear hearing protection when shooting it?

I took my 340 with an Accubrake elk hunting this year and it shoots like a dream. However, I also keep foam earplugs in my pocket to use if time permits. When practicing or at the bench I always wear hearing protection with any rifle so brake or no brake it makes no difference.

You have several options for builds with less noise and/or recoil off a .300 Weatherby with the most logical being a .257 Weatherby.

Another option would be to opt for a slightly less effective muzzle brake that creates a lot less muzzle blast. I'm seriously considering taking the Accubrake off my 338/378 and putting on one of the smaller Muscle-Brakes. This (I have been told) will increase my felt recoil by 20% but reduce the noise level by 50% — a trade-off I can live with.

Your third option is the most logical — swap the .300 Weatherby for a rifle you want or sell yours outright & buy what you want. If I knew the version of the Mark-V you have I might just make an offer.

ive heard of the 6.5stw but heard that barrell life is short but have yet to find any info on it and i have no idea how to fire form brass as im very new to reloading. i cant find any info on the 6.5-300 either so if you have any info and or ballistics that would be great.....yes i did wear hearing protection but if you have never been around a darrell holland muzzle break your not missing much other than an incredibly concussion and muzzle blast but it is VERY effective in reducing recoil...at this point im not interested in selling it for whatever reason. i already have a 257 weatherby in a vanguard rifle but its for sale at this time as i never shoot it, i took it to wyoming with me this year but it never left the truck i just didnt have any trust in the rifle. the rifle i have is stainless and it was manufactured in 1997 if that helps you deteremine what one it is

OK, you have a USA made Mark V.

As noted above, I'd consider changing brake styles. The muscle brake is highly regarded as a side discharge brake that is also effective.

I have Accubrakes on a couple of rifles. I find that using this brake on the range under the canopy or deeper in the woods will result in it sounding loud. If I shoot it in wide open spaces the noise is not bad and the blast not even noticeable. I happened to not have my earplugs in when shooting off a small plateau and taking my elk this year. I never noticed the noise or blast at all. 4 days later in the woods I had to make a quick shot - and I sure noticed the noise then!

My point is that any surrounding surface that might bounce the noise back at you will make it sound louder.

What about a 7mm Wby? It will probably be on the border of too much recoil, but it sure is a great preformer.
I think that anything less than a 7 WBY almost does the Mark V action an injustice. Its an action built for high horsepower, big chambering. A 6.5 would be cool, but with 3 .264's it would be totally redundant.

How about a 6.5-284 or a 6.5-06

my opinion of the 6.5-284 is that its a good cartridge that is very accurate but its still a wanna-be 264 win mag...i think after some careful deliberation that i'll keep the action and have it rebarreled into a 257 weatherby at a later date

If you dont trust a .257 WBY then you have issues. That is one bad arse round. it was one of Roy Weatherby's favorite chambering's and he shot it more than any other for the very reason you are looking for. Lighter recoil, devastating on game.

Have you considered just simply going to a lighter load on your .300? Reduce it down and I bet it would be a pleasure to shoot.

i trust the 257 roy 100%, i just didnt trust my personal rifle as much as my goto win model 70 264. as i had traveled almost 1200 miles to hunt and i was doing it solo with sparce game i wanted to be confident that when i pulled the trigger the bullet went where it was supposed to and i just couldnt do it with the 257 i have now as it doesnt shoot as well as it was said to
