I'm wanting to size down some 30-06 lapua brass for my 25-06 but I'm not sure about the steps still learning... I've been told I need to run them through a .280 die a .270 die then my 25-06 die. Is that necessary or can I just run them through my 25-06 die?

I would recommend the stepping down. I sized some from .30 to .27 to .25 and it worked.

I primarily use Winchester .270 Win brass and size down to .25 for making my .25-06 AI cases. 1 easy step.

Necking DOWN is far more forgiving than necking up. I would go slow on one case and see how it feels. I have necked down 30-06 to 25-06 in one pass, no steps needed, but it depends whether you have a neck die or not, I do, and that's what I use. A FL die will work, but, the need to lube the cases is a paln.

Cheers.

Agreed.

Old trick is using your 25-06 seater die with the stem removed for an intermediate die

Annealing is never a bad move. Personally, I'd do it before and after.

You might need to turn the necks. Sizing down will make the necks thicker. You do not want to have too little clearance on a loaded round. That can give very high pressures.

I did it both ways. 30.06 to 25.06 and 30.06-.270-25.06. Didn't lose any cases either way. I have to admit it was easier doing it in 2 steps. But, I have nothing but time on my hands so it didn't bother me.

I have done RP and WIN 308 to 260 and 10% have necks too thick.
I have done Lapua 308 to 260 and 100% of the necks are too thick.
I have done RP and WIN 8x57 to 257 Roberts and 0% of the necks are too thick
I have done Win 30-06 to 6.5-06 A square and 0% of the cases are too long.

I have done LC 308 to 243 and some of the necks are too tight

The only sure fire way to know if your brass will be too thick after necking down, is to do a chamber cast and measure,

and turn the necks accordingly, based on loaded round measurements.

I resized 100 Lapua brass from 30-06 to 6.5-06 in one step. There is only .007 in the difference. Check the necks before and after.

Good luck and shoot straight

Hey there,

I use lapua 30-06 brass in both my 25-06 ai's... I run it through my RCBS full length die in one pass, lube up the case with sizing wax and don't look back...
No need to anneal as the lapua brass comes annealed from factory... The necks on my chambers are on the tight side so I do turn the necks down to 0.015" thick before I fireform, going from 30 down to 25 I have had some necks end up about 0.0175", if nothing else turning the necks ensures consistent neck tension and helps improve run out ... Since I'm fire forming to an AI I also leave a bit of a false shoulder by not completely necking down the whole neck(probably not needed but I prefer to make sure I get a good seal)
