Questions about 7stw

Hey I have a Remington 700 action. It is the standard action, so could it be used for a 7mmstw or not would I have to get a magnum action? Don't know if there is a difference I'm new. I think I would have to open up the bolt face but and it should work.

I hope someone chimes in, I think if the boltface is smaller than the caliber you want, a gunsmith opens it up with a lathe. It has to be a long action for a 7stw though.

Rems are either short or long actions. You should use a rifle that is already a mag caliber for a conversion, but if you want to spend a lot more $$$ any la remmy could work. More gunsmith time than it's worth imo. Get a 7rem m700 and punch it out or re-barrel.

What caliber is it in now ?

If it is a long action magnum bolt face (7 RM, 300 Win Mag, 300 Weatherby ETC) it will work.

You have the standard .308/.30-06 bolt-face. The action is the same (all the Rem long-actions are), the only difference is the bolt-face opening is larger on a magnum. Therefore you CAN turn your action into a 7mmSTW, by having your gunsmith open up the bolt-face to the standard magnum size.

Or just get a mag bolt... it will slide rite unto the current action u have

Yeah I now know it can be done. Open up the bolt face. And mess with the feeding ramps is what I was told what has to be done. But with all that work it would be easyer to just buy a custom action.

Not if you are having him true-up your action, while he rebarrels it. Shouldn't cost much more, if you are having him do all the rest of the work to the gun.

Pretty sure your feed rails might be okay. If you went to a RUM you would have to widen feed rails. As for feeding this would be the perfect time to get a Wyatt's mag box installed and then see how it feeds. You really need the extra length the Wyatt's box provides.

This is true. Make sure you get the one that extends to 4.000".

There is another option.

A 280 AI would fit in your receiver and bolt without any alterations.

The 280 AI can exceed the 7mm rem mag with bullets up to 160 grains and is known for its accuracy.

It is very popular with the F class crowed (600 and 1000 yard shooting) and does well with 180 grain
bullets.

It is not as powerful as the 7 STW or the 7 RUM but it is very good on Elk and deer.

If it is set up correctly it can be very accurate with factory 280 ammo during fire forming. some hunt
with the factory 280 ammo and fire form at the same time.

Could I shoot the 168 Bergers out of the 280ai? And if so what fps would you lose over the stw?
