Im trying to help a friend get his 300wsm shooting. His rifle is not liking factory Ammo and I am looking for a place to start. What are your most accurate loads? Which bullet? Powder & charge weight? Primer? Brass? Seating depth? I know all barrels and rifles are different I'm just looking for the combinations that seem to work well across the board to start out with. Btw his rifle is built on a long action with a 1-12" twist Shilen barrel.
Thanks and hope you all have had a successful season!
Tim

H4350 is a well known good powder for the 300 WSM with up to 180 gr. bullets. You can get the starting and Max loads from the Hodgdon web site. Also it is very popular to run nonmagnum primers with this load. The best loads with this powder are right around Max and run around 2950.

If you want more speed run Rl17. It is temp sensitive though. Good accurate powder for the WSM. Is was designed for it. Good load data for it on the Alliance powder website.

I run the H4350 with 180 Accubond and RL17 with 210 Berger VLD.

It's a decades old myth that all barrels are different and each one shoots most accurate with its own unique recipie. Good commercial match ammo shoots very good in all of them that are properly installed.

I don't have my Sierra manual handy but their 300 WSM accuracy loads do well in different barrels.

Every rifle is different. My experience is find the bullet weight your rifle likes then fine tune the load. I went through 150, 165, bullets they would not shoot decent groups. When I got to 180 gr. first group 9/16 at 100 yds. My load of choice for my 300 WSM, Case Win. Primer, Win LR Mag. Powder 65.0 gr. (Sixty Five) IMR 4350 This load is listed Max by Speer 2004 data. Start at 61.0 and work up. Cartridge Over All Length. 2.860. Be careful and good luck in finding the load this gun likes.

Thanks for the replies keep them coming. I've only tried one bullet and powder so far the best group I've achieved was about .75" @ 100yds with 175 SMK and 66.5gr h4350 seated to touch the lands.

WARNING, THIS IS A WORKED UP MAX LOAD THAT SHOWS NO PRESSURE SIGNS IN MY, I REPEAT, MY RIFLE.

My 26" Savage Model 12 likes the Berger 185r, Fed 215 MRP, Winchester brass, 69 grains H4831SC which is not temperature sensitive, bullet seated about 15 thousandths off the lands. Would recommend using a bullet comparator to measure off the ogive and not overall length. This load runs at 3008 fps. My best groupings at 100 yards is about .5 MOA, two connected holes with three shots. At 545 yards it will shoot .75 MOA.

H4350 is the "go to" powder in the 1000 BR crowd. H4350 is temp stable, so it should also work well in hunting situations. I use it with every bullet up to the 230 Hybrid.

As far as bullets, my 1-12 Krieger LOVES the 200 grain hybrid. I know that it is only considered "marginally stable" according to Berger, but is awesome in my tube, at least down to 50 degrees f. I know of a bunch of people who shoot the 55 grain Nostler Balistic tip in a 14 twist with fantastic results, but , according to Berger, it is totally unstable (unless I punched the numbers wrong).

If it does not work, try the Berger 190 VLD.

Good luck,

Tod

I have had good success with:

Berger 210 VLD
WLRM
66.5gr H4831SC
2.940" OAL (10 thou off lands)
2805FPS AVG on Magnetospeed

Good luck!

Brandon

That's surprising I would not have even tried 200+ grain bullets because of the 12 twist but I will for sure try them now. I have a stock pile of 208 Amax bullets that I'll try. Right now ive got 185 vlds, 180accubonds, 180 ballistic tips, 185 scenars, and the 208 Amax bullets that I haven't tried. I haven't seen any R17 on the shelves locally and in South Dakota the temperature tends to vary wildly during hunting season so I'm probably going to stick with hodgdons powders for their temp stability. I've got a good supply of h4350, h4831 and h1000 but it might be a little too slow for the 300 however It works great in my 7wsm.

Mine is a 10 twist for the 210VLD, so I do not have any experience with 12 twist stabilization. With a 24" barrel, I did have marginally higher velocity with H4831sc relative to H4350 (about 30fps avg).

200 grain match bullets shot in several 30 caliber magnum cases with 1:12 twist barrels have tested 1/2 MOA at 1000 yards for decades.

I've shot 180's through 1:13 twist 300 Win Mag barreled hunting rifle into sub MOA at 1000.

Factory rifles usually have twist rates that most customers think are best. And they have to stabilize the heaviest bullet that may be used in cold weather. Most factory barrels are twisted too fast for best accuracy in most applications.

My bone stock Savage 11 TH has a particular fondness for the 190 VLD over 68.0 grains of IMR-7828. CCI-200 primers, Winchester cases. 2.231" (.020" jump) to ogive at 2908 fps. Best group so far is .589" at 402 yards (.14 MOA) Those loads punched clean holes through 3/8" stainless plate at that distance.
