hodgdon 4350 vs imr4895 in 30-06

Odds are your H4350 load is substantially faster than the 4895 load, and given the slower load has more "barrel recoil time", typically, we see the slower load impact higher at 100 yards. Some barrels, stocks, loads etc will have a much more pronounced change than others.

With differences in powder, bullets, barrel harmonics, etc. no two loads shoot exactly the same! Pick the bullet/powder combination you like best, and stick to it! Simple! I like the 180 AB!

I appreciate all the comments and suggestions. May be a bit before I get another test session in, with a chrono next time. That should give some good data, and whenever I find some powder, I'll definitely flip the loads and see what happens. Meanwhile I'm zeroed with the sst for sure and can easily adjust the 5" on the turret easily if need to in a pinch. I'll drop an update for those curious when I have the info.

This is my first forum to seek input, i normally work my problems out solo.
Hodgdon 4350 vs imr 4895 in 30-06 savage axis.

I ran into an issue with 2 loads and am on a hunt for answers.
46gr imr4895 with 165gr nosler ballastic tip.
57gr h4350 with 165 gr hornady sst
After 100 yard zero with hornady sst, i decided to compare the nosler and the nosler hit 5" higher. I know there's a ballistic coefficient difference and my next step is to chronograph these loads but thought someone may have logical input. I'm not able to rationalize this much difference at 100 yards.
Good to have things sorted out with more than one powder or bullet. As correctly stated previously, a load prints where a load prints due to multiple factors. They are nice to know and understand but certainly not a requirement. Just write the data down and you can switch between them readily if supplies get low or if needed. IMO, there is practically zero difference in the performance of those two bullets on game. Pick one and roll with it. Since you are running a bolt action rifle, I too would choose H4350, it's well known superior temperature stability makes it a solid choice. Most importantly, have fun with your rig and share that with family and friends.

Where did you find the data for the IMR 4895? Hodgdon starting load is at 49.0gn, and it's not even on the Nosler chart for 165gn bullets. Staring load for a 150gn Nosler bullet is 47.0 gn. I bet this is barely going 2400 FPS.

Cartridge : .30-06 Spring. (SAAMI)
Bullet : .308, 165, Hornady BTSP 3045
Useable Case Capaci: 61.410 grain H2O = 3.987 cm
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.280 inch = 83.31 mm
Barrel Length : 18.5 inch = 469.9 mm
Powder : IMR 4895

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,

Meanwhile 57.0gn of H4350 is stout, and probably 2800 FPS or faster. How did you land on these two different charge weights?

he's talking 4895 for the 46 grain charge, which puts him somewhere in the 2600-2700 fps range
with 4350 that would be a very mild load, but not 4895

I know he talking about IMR 4895 at 46gn. I posted the QL to support what I said, it's probably 50fps slow for barrel length, so to accout for that here's the Hodgdon data also - 24" barrel, and he's three grains below minimum:
IMR 4895.JPG

Nosler data is conservative, but does list 57.5gn as max for 165gn/ H4350. Hodgon goes up to 59gn max. H4350 wouldn't be pressuring out, you'd be limited by how much you can compress at a given COL. Hodgdon data uses a longer COL than Nosler.

The 4895 loads i worked up some 30 years back, i believe from a speer manual, i would have to backtrack, the 4350 loads was through several books and internet searches then worked to the 57gn.
