Fixed power scope?

Just purchased a Smith & Wesson lever action 44 magnum, the 1854.
Looking for a scope, something with a small objective lens so I can keep it close to the barrel.
I don't have a problem with spending money for quality, but, the idea of spending $700 to make a 30-60 yard shot seems a little silly.
I may end up with a red dot, but I don't care for them very much.
I was thinking I would like to try a fixed 4 or 6 power, but I can't find a fixed power scope anywhere! Does anyone make fixed power scopes any more?
 
I would go with a fixed power or low powered variable. I don't know where you hunt but I suspect you have some thick brush in places
like I do in Arkansas. For that application, I like a scope much more than a red dot because I can see the brush in the scope and thread the needle, a red dot does not give me that. Also, I don't glass with a scope but once I see that the animal is a Buck, before I pull the trigger, I may see that he is a little smaller in body size or a smaller rack than I thought, eliminating ground shrinkage. A red dot will not give me that.
The fixed power scopes are about gone but I picked a used one up at a gun show a couple of weeks ago.
 
Get an old m8 or fx2 2.5x ultralight. Longer eye relief and only weigh a few ounces so it won't throw the balance off too bad. Does the smith use a proprietary mount or share with marlin? If you can use a marlin get a low mount from Ashley precision, lowest possible mount you can buy.

It has a pic rail right above the receiver.
 
I shot a 6x fixed burris on my hunting rifle for a couple of years when I was younger and it worked great. If you like simple I think its a great option.
 
I put a fixed 4x on a 30-30 for my dad years ago. Don't remember what brand. My son now has that gun. Worked great for a woods gun.

You mention a red dot and that you don't care for them much. I am not a fan of the old red dots but, are you referring to reflex/holographic type?
I just want to state that I am very pleased with a vortex defender-ST on a revolver. Having used handguns with scopes and old rifles with 4x red fields for me the reflex site wins hands down, especially if not purposely shooting more than 100 ish yards.
