Just back from a Tahr hunt to Mount Cook National Park, the highest mountain in New Zealand. We hunt there every year, but this was the first time my wife Fi had accompanied the boys and I. This time of year the bulls leave the nannies up in the highest mountain bluffs and congregate in their bachelor groups on the mid valley slopes. This means you don't have to be a mountaineer to hunt them, but does mean they are starting to lose their awesome mane unfortunately. You'll see Fi makes a good 730 yard shot with the 8lb all up 338FX shooting the 300gn Elite Hunter at just under 3000fps. And gets a bit of a swim in the freezing cold glaciated river too!:)
Watch the movie on the video page on our website.

Congrats to you and the Misses. I looked at some of your other vid's there too and "black betty" nearly made me pee my pants with laughter. That's quite the little boat.

Thanks guys. Yep, there's probably not too many wives who'd trust their husbands nor their own capabilities enough to get into that river! :)
We have a lot more footage of the hunt I'll make up into a better movie to go onto one of our hunting DVD's one day.

Just curious, whats a .338 FX?

The 338 FX stands for Fatso Xtreme. All our wildcats based on the 338 lapua case whether shortened WSM length, standard magnum length, or full length all have the name Fatso in them somewhere. The first one of these fatter than WSM/RUM based wildcats was the 7mm Fatso, the WSM length version, and so the family name has continued.
The 338 FX is our max capacity full length Lapua improved. We generally build it in lightweight walkabout rifles striving for 8 pounds scoped ready to rumble. If we're building a heavier 338 we usually go with one of our bigger wildcats. The 338 FX produces fairly typical high end Lapua improved velocities. Out of our standard 28" barrel it pushes the 250gn at 3300fps and the 300gn at 3000fps. In the vid Fiona (Fi for short) is shooting the 300gn Elite Hunter ahead of 107.5gns of Re33. If you look really closely when playing back slow mo you can see the bull turns his head back over his shoulder as Fi shoots and the bullet actually goes through the bottom of his jaw, partially expands before entering the shoulder. There was no exit wound. I think these Elite Hunters are going to expand quite nicely at the medium capacity 338 velocities, but will probably still use the slightly heavier jacket OTM's at the larger 338 Lunatic velocities.
