Just put together a Howa 1500 in .308 in an MDT Oryx chassis with an Arken sh 4 5-25 . .308 for the barrel life and cheap and easy to reload . 20 moa rail , hoping to stretch it out to 1000 plus yards in Texas in a few weeks. All in price is about $1600.
My favorite cartridges for long range target is 6.5 Creedmoor out to 1,250 ish yards and 338 LM for much further out. Both of these rifles are MPA's topped with high end glass. Hard to beat the 6.5, very efficient with lots of factory ammo and reloading components readily available.

I shoot a lot in windy conditions, and for that, I think these kinds of bullets shine:
- 195 Berger 7mm
- 225 Hornady ELM
- 285 Hornady ELM in .338
- 300 Berger .338
Obviously, anything that shoots equivalent BC bullets as fast would work as well, but in my experience, wind is the killer and anything you can do to maximize your allowable wind error is the right way to go. It is not just the wind itself, but the TOF.

.30 and .33 calibers.
If you're shooting factory ammo and/or rifle, 6.5 or 6 Creedmoor are good choices. If reloading - lots more options.

My favorite caliber is 284 Winchester with a 184 Berger. Not too much recoil and the BC is awesome. This rifle is my F Class rifle but hunting rifles are 300 Rum and 280 Ackley.
