I am talking in the 7.5 - 8.5 lb (9lbs tops)range complete with optics, because that is my target range for this next build. My intended optic choice is 21.8oz and ring choice are 1.6oz each.

Forgot to add, intended load is Berger 140gr VLD-H with a healthy dose of N165

I have been told more than once that recoil would be to harsh for the kids and possibly the gf.

Thanks

I built this as a light weight deer rifle. 6x47 Lapua in a Kelbly Atlas Tactical action, Proof 24" sendero light contour barrel, and Manners eh8 stock. Nightforce scope on it was for load testing and now it has a Vortex Razor lht on it. Tips the scales at a little over 8- 1/2 lbs.

I have a 6.5 prc that weighs 7-3/4 pounds without a scope. Add your scope weight to that and it's just a little over 9 lbs. I'm shooting 156 Berger's @ 3000 fps. and it's a pleasure to shoot. I wouldn't have a problem putting my wife behind the trigger of it. It does have a brake on it though.

My 280 AI is just barely over 8#, however it has a muzzlebrake. The recoil is easy with a brake and I never shot it without so I am not sure how it would feel. Next time I am out I'll pull the brake and see.

It depends on the recoil sensitivity of the shooter, but as others have noted, an effective muzzle brake can tame the felt recoil and muzzle rise significantly.

Not .280 AI, but I have a Kimber 84L Hunter .30-06 rechambered to .30 Gibbs at 7 lbs 9.1 oz shooting the 190 Berger VLDs at 2806 FPS, and the felt recoil is highly manageable.

Like Feenix said, it will depend on the kid.

Is the shooter walking into cold, or is there time, and equipment to build up to it?

The right brake will make recoil a non-issue. My little 7 yr old son can shoot my 7 Allen Mag (338 Lapua Improved case) with no trouble or pain. (9 lb scoped but a lot more gun than a 6.5/280 AI and it hardly moves. I can spot shots at 300 yds) The Terminator brakes are a good option, but there are too many to mention.

I just finished up putting together a semi custom based off a Bergara B14 Ridge. I'm at 8.5lbs with scope and 5 rounds loaded. It's a 270 Winchester, but just as easily could be the caliber you're attempting.
Something else I'd consider if I were you is the 6.5 Sherman. I used to have one and it runs a bit faster than the 6.5-06 AI and is simple to form cases for.
Here's a photo of my rig
