They get gunshy fast in my neighborhood, but if you're out early/late & confident at >800 yards, you might get a shot off. You might be in for some windshield time depending on snow- most of the woofs tend to shadow the elk & they don't come down until it's belly deep. The flip side is: they come to elk calls pretty well in archery season

I'm going for elk deer combo in Nov to the lima dillon area. Are there wolves there??? Like to do my part to save the elk and deer.

A pack of wolves will cover a big area. One day they are at such and such and the next they are 5-10 miles away. Look for public access in the national forests from Red Lodge, East to Idaho and Canada. A good spot might be the Big Hole/Bloody Dick Creek Divide South of Wisdom. Lots of national forest and good access and good places to camp. Not a bad idea to go to the local pubs and other establishments and ask the locals about recent wolf activity. Buy a Montana Atlas & Gazeter - very valuable.

Montana Atlas & Gazetteer - DeLorme

Once you pick a genral area get the local BLM or NF map which has better detail.

Ya, there are wolves there but you'll either run into them standing in the middle of the road or you'll see tracks, it's shoot on sight down around here. I know a guy who shoots one from his porch every year, last one was taking a leak on his tree when it got a hole blown through it.
If you know the areas you'll be hitting the most in a PM I could tell you where the packs cross, I frequent the area a little :D

Almost anyone in the ranching community will be more then happy to give you the where and when on wolf locations! After big game season most people really relax on private property access. North of Yellowstone Park the bastards are all over the place! Many on this website do not believe me, but what ever. A guy i know just killed one days ago in his yard in Jardine MT. It opens for rifle on Sept. 15 this year, and a guy can kill 5 wolves per year, so come get a dumb one now and more with a good hide later on!
It is not easy most of the time and they are very nocturnal.

Rooster is giving you some good advise. Your best bet for being successful is getting cooperation form ranchers. That can be hit or miss but definitely more possible after the regular hunting season. After the hunting season, when the snow gets deeper in the high country, more elk will move onto the hay fields and the wolves will follow. If you can find a rancher that will point you in a good direction and give you access, that will greatly increase your odds.

I think we need to hang out!! gun)
