Building a custom out of a WEATHERBY MARK V

I have a old weather beaten MK V With a Med weight Douglas Match Barrel in 300 WBY, New barrell was added after rolling a horse in the Mtns packing an elk out 25 years ago. A friend with a known gunsmith in Colorado had it done for me. No consideration then, was made to Accurize it. I did have a muzzle break done when it was rebarrelled. It shoots to 1+ Moa most of the time. What can be done to get this to be better with, a better barrel, accurizing, Bedding, a new stock, Pillar bedding ect. I have never done anything else to this rifle, but shoot ok out to 600 yards, where it travels out too much to be an accurate 1000 yard gun at present. It seems in following this thread, it may be possible on a reasonable budget.

This is a great site, I am very new to it, and I see and am amazed with the experience and talent here!

Any advice would be appreciated, This thread is Just what I needed also!

I fully intend to also get a real long range gun in 338 - something soon. Looking at all my options now. I have talked to Shawn Carlock and may take his class and rent a rifle to check them out.

MTtrapper, any of the big 338's will fit well on your mk 5 action. With a headspace guage from midway you can screw a custom barrel in yourself, adjust the trigger and bed it. It will probably shoot very well.

Shawn is one of the best in the business if you want to learn long range hunting. The innovative design of his new long range rifle shows his extreme expertise. To have him build a rifle is probably more expensive than the op of this thread was looking for. But it would be a good one.

No problem, he was recommended to me from this site years back and would try to talk to him about options for the Weatherby. It's nice to have someone like him that knows these guns/actions when most are building on remmy or custom actions.

No, sorry... I am the Original "Weatherbyman" ;)

We have been building customs since 1996 and have hundreds of customers in the US from Alaska to South Africa.

Look us up.

We are the long range specialist when it comes to the Mark V Action.

Mr. WeatherbyMan... I have a question. I have a Mark V Accumark .257 Wby and it barely shoots under 1 MOA no matter what. I bought the rifle new in 2008, and have only put maybe 100-120 rounds through it. And factory ammo or handloads I am lucky to get 1/2 MOA, but most of the time 3/4-1 MOA groups. The action or lug has neither one been bedded. Should I send it back to Weatherby or just pay even MORE money (than the gun already cost me new) and have my smith true it up and get it shooting 1 hole groups? It's pretty bad when I have $1200 Remington 700's that will outshoot a $2,200 Weatherby semi-custom rifle...

You can do as you see fit but there is NO WAY I'm going to gut a Mark V Weatherby rifle to use as parts for a "custom" rifle. FARRRRR too may top $$ actions on the market to have to take a Mark V apart.

Get the lug and action bedded and you got what you got! If it shoots bugholes..then GOOD.....if it dont then shed a tear and get rid of the rifle. Add in the fact that if it has the typical #2 contour barrel on it you wont ever shoot single hole groups especially if your quickly firing the rounds!

Mine is the AccuMark, which has the #3 (bull sporter) stainless fluted barrel...

I wasn't gonna snatch the barrel off, I was gonna have my smith tinker with it...He's a miracle worker with rebuilding factory rifles and making them shoot. Worst case scenario he calls Weatherby and they send him another barrel to put on it.

I'd be wiling to bet it just needs the action and lug bedded... That's pretty average factory groupings for Accumarks before bedding everything. Then they tend to settle down and straighten up, from what all I've read.

It has a Zeiss 6.5-20x50 sitting on top, so, the glass is not an issue.

So you have a location in Alabama? I don't use FB...

Weatherby will not send a barrel to anyone. They only do that "in house". Which I doubt as not one person their can answer anything technical and he finally admitted they send them out but they won't say where. I was going to be a Weatherby service center but when I found out they wouldn't let me chamber and install their barrels I told them to take a hike.

Bed the lug and tang, tune the trigger to what ever you want, maybe touch up the crown and that Accumark should be pretty good. My worst Accumark ever with a completely fried barrel still shoots .4's consistently with 110 Accubonds.

I'll order some bedding compound, or if I get a chance to go to my smith's shop, I'll just drop it off with him and let him work his magic...
