I have been shooting 308 and I have got it down to three shots in one hole at 100 yd. Now my friends have changed to 6 mm CM so I have gotten out my old 6 mm Rem to shoot with them. I have always used Sie 85 gr. HPBT with this rifle and it has worked great in 100 yd. shooting. We have extended the range to 500 yd. and my friends have changed to heavy bullets over 100 gr. I don't want to be left out or buy up a lot of bullets I want use. The question is, has anyone got any idea or have used the 6 mm Rem for 500 yd. or farther, and if so what bullet and powder worked best?

243 Winchester
243 SLR
6mm Creedmoor
243 Ackley
6mm Remington
6mm Remington Ackley
240 Weatherby
6mmPPC
6mmBR
6mmx45
6mmx6.8spc
6mmDasher
6mmx47Lapua

I'm sure I left out something.
So, Choose your Poison.
I've had most of these calibers and right now I'm really liking the small primer 6mm Creedmoor , bullet speeds are exceeding the 243 Win.

so I have gotten out my old 6 mm Rem to shoot with them.

It's going to depend upon how old your rifle is. The original .244 Remington was a slower twist rate, 1:12", so you will be limited by the length of the bullets which can be stabilized in your rifle. If you have a modern twist rate, 1:9", you should be able to handle bullets better suited to the longer distance of 500 yards where your buddies want to compete.

The "no brainer got to" powder would be H414/W760. Use a mag primer. Work up to max, runs very cool, and shoots bug holes at great velocities.

I'd say look at 105s if your twist supports them. I run H414 with 87s but think it a bit quick for 105s...I use Re22/23/26 there with great results.

Depends on your twist like mentioned above...but most likely it's a slow twist and won't be well suited for modern LR type bullets.

Assuming your gun is marked "6mm Rem" (which would have the 1 in 9 twist) your best bet would be:

Berger Bullets, 6 MM, 105 Grain, Match Grade, VLD, 100 Per Box (24528); G1 BC=0.532; G7 BC=0.272
-----------------------------
The highest BC bullet I could find for 6mm (.243") was the DTAC RBT 115 grain (G1 BC of 0.585 to 0.620 depending on whose numbers you believe) but I don't think a 1 in 9 is fast enough to stabilize it.

Other 'options' that might work are:
103 gr Hornady ELD X (Item #24550); BC = 0.512 (G1) or 0.258 (G7)
105 gr Hornady A-Max
107 gr Sierra MatchKing (SMK)
108 gr Hornady ELD Match (Item #24561); BC = 0.536 (G1) or 0.270 (G7)

For bullets in this weight range, good powder choices to try would be:
H1000
H4350, IMR4350, or Accurate 4350
H4831sc
Reloader 22 & 25
Vihtavuori N165

Good luck! Seems like you are having fun and you have friends helping to push you to try new things.

Believe it or not Retumbo good with 105 s in 243. 48.3 grains is OCW and it s slightly compressed. Work up to it.

I get 3050 fps out of my 26" VLS 700 with that load and 105 AMax. Have taken to 1000 yds on steel. Pretty impressive results for a little ole 243 !

I just LOVE the 107gr. Sierra HPBT MK in my 6-284. You'll need an 8 twist for optimal stabilization and flight. I too shot the 85gr Sierra HPBT until the 107 came along. Stick with what worked for you in the past! Just my 2 cents.

Like has been said IF marked 6mm then that's got a 1 in 9 twist, verifie it and then load 107 Sierras in it, you should have no problem working up a load that shoots great, keep us posted on your progress.

My 6's and 243's love the 105 AMAX/ELD and Berger. If wind is not a big factor, I have had good success
at 600 with 85BT on P-dogs and marmots
