Best 600y elk cartridge to built on top of 270 Win Tikka action

I must say the short mag options are a good choice as well.

I'm running a 7 suam at 3.1 inches with a .195 freebore. It's loaded with H1k and a 180 Hybrid doing 2840 from a 21 inch barrel. At 8000' asl that's 2300 fps and 10 MOA of drop at 600. It still carries close to 2000 fps at 1000 yards.

I've considered 280 AI but it seems like I might run into COAL issues. 284 WIN doesn't seem like it has enough bang.

Are there any other options with standard bolt face?
I too considered the .280 AI in 2012, but everybody seems to have one, so I went with .270 AI instead. I am propelling the 175 Matrix VLD out of 30" Lilja 1:8" at 2996 FPS (got close to 3100 FPS but group opened up) with H4831SC - others are claiming an additional 100 FPS with RL26.

With a 200Y zero at my altitude of 3300' :
600Y = 2275 FPS/2012 FT-LBS
900Y = 1957 FPS/1489 FT-LBS

Just rebarrel another 270 win. With 8 twist , 24" or 26" throat it to handle the heavy's. Same as a 6.8 Western

What he said. 270ai. 8 twist.😎

300 PRC won't fit in a tikka action
I'll be honest wasnt thinking tikka when I wrote the post(was just talking to another guy about a defiance)
Agreed probably not the best solution in this case but it is possible.
You can load it with the right bullet combo under 3.4 or they have bottom metals with slightly mods can run aics out to about 3.62

I just built a 7Rem off the tikka action. You can get a longer coal (3.600) by changing to a red snake bottom metal (or Wyatt's box)

I would change bolt face and mag. And go 7Rem. I am pushing a 168 ABLR 2955 with 71 grains of H1000 out of a 24" proof. With a BTO 2.744. Jump of .86. .4-.55 5 shot groups not uncommon. Rarely over .65.
This is why I went 7 saum. I am getting same velocities with 8 grains less powder. Only drawback is brass at this point if just starting out.

Lots of good suggestions; the easiest and certainly fit the bill would be a 270 AI, the 280 AI is just barely more powerful and no critter at any range would know the difference. However, if you want something that would max out the .473 (standard) bolt face look at the Gibbs line of wildcats (all based on a 30-06) 6.5, 270, 7mm, 30 and 338. Below is a quote from a guy running a 338 Gibbs. I have a 338-06 built on a Colt light rifle that I have entertained the idea of converting to a Gibbs, but at 7.25 lbs running a 175 HH bullet at nearly 3000 fps it already has excellent performance. If I were to ever build a super light, kill anything rifle for North America the 338 Gibbs would be hard to beat.

I now have a 338 Gibbs with a 26" barrel. With Re17 and 210 gr. Swift Scirocco's I'm getting 2950 fps. Although primer pockets are good, this is max IMO. I'll settle on 2925 fps

Many years ago, I had a 270 Gibbs, and while vels for the bullets of the time were impressive, it only had a 1/10 twist which was suitable for that era. When I have another itch for something new, I would like to try the 270 Gibbs again but with a 1/8 twist and the VLD's.

That would be an awesome combination.

I'd vote for a Sherman 7mm MAX, 7 SAUM, any WSM, or wait for the new 7mm PRC. Those will all fit nicely in you action with a small change to the bolt head. Sorry, I like 7s.
