Best 600y elk cartridge to built on top of 270 Win Tikka action

I've considered 280 AI but it seems like I might run into COAL issues. 284 WIN doesn't seem like it has enough bang.

Are there any other options with standard bolt face?

If you're worried about not enough bang why not swap bolts and go with a magnum bolt face and look at bigger cartridges?
Or just trying to stay strictly standard bolt face?

What bullets do you want to shoot? Your COAL will be fine with most bullets.

Yes I think that might be the best path forward. What would you recommend with mag bolt face? The tikka action will still limit me to 3.34" COAL.

Copy I was just asking for the case of the 300 Sherman or somthing along those lines. More of a would you want to type of thing

If you can run a .270 Win, you can run a .280 AI.

For 600 yards a .284 would be fine.

I have a 280ai on a Tikka and am shooting 162eldx and 160 AB's just fine. If you want to go heavier I would not go with the 280.

barrel is done so going to order a new barrel. .270 bullet selection is abysmal compared to 6.5mm or 7mm so doesn't make sense to get another 270 barrel

this is good info! would berger 180 hybrids be too long for tikka mag?

If you're worried about mag length you could go with the 30-06 ai, every bit the potential with a tad shorter case but not the cult following to make it sammi approved.

A 185 berger at 2700 fps and 8000 asl maintains 2000 fps to 650 yards. That should be more than doable from a 24-26 inch barrel.
