Best 6.5 CM Hunting Bullet for Moderate Long Range Distances

If you put the Berger bullets where they'll do the most good, in softer tissues, and they work as designed they will perform very well.

The problem is I've seen too many cases where they failed to open up at all and just penciled through or blew up shallow failing to penetrate into the body cavity before fragmenting for me to have confidence in them.

The one deer I shot this year with a Berger bullet failed to track and exploded shallow causing an excessive amount of wasted meat and a slow death. That reminded me of why I quit shooting them. I'd found an old box of 300RUM loaded with the 210 and had just decided to go ahead and shoot them up so I could have the cases to reload with.

The rest I expended on paper targets and rocks.
This is exactly why I don't shoot them.
Maybe a 300gr in a lapua because even if it sheds 70 percent it's still big.

I agree.

If I had to pick one, and only one LR bullet it would be the Nosler ABLR but the Barnes LRX would not be far behind.

The Peregrine does not have as high of a BC as the LRX but they will open and expand at even lower impact velocity and at the ranges I'm normally shooting they've been more than adequate for me since I started shooting them 7 years ago. Hopefully they'll soon get their supply issues resolved so I can get back to shooting them exclusively. If they can't, I still have the LRX and ABLR's to work with.

I was even more generous in the theoretical load I worked up using the 147gr ElD-X and a Muzzle Velocity of 2,800 fps which is far above what the 6.5x47 is capable of with such a bullet.
Like I said before, where is altitude, barometric pressure, temp on your chart? You say your the top dog on BC you don't have a clue. We hunt between 10,000 and 12,000 feet. What you think that doesn't change your trajectory during flight? This is supposed to be long range hunting yet you show me squat.. Don't act like I don't shoot thousands of round's and I don't test bullets to make sure I get the best load I can that will kill the animal the fastest. I started on this page to help others learn how to shoot long range and to find answers I don't have but all I find is the opposite..

I don't care if you're hunting at 100,000', the 6.5Lapua is out of gas way short of 1,200yds.

You've already proved you don't know ballistics so go bother someone else.

Ignorance truly is bliss….

I'll play the devils advocate here.
What would happen if that buddy hit the shoulder socket of even shoulder of that elk.
At that distance that would have been a terrible wound on that animal but you would never find it. Let be real anyone who has shot that distance at altitude, which usually means your in the mountains, which then means winds do weird things. Even with a big 30 cal I know I could make the shot but to know it would go perfect in that high shoulder shot placement is not something I'd try.
I assume high shoulder since you said it went right down. Behind shoulder at that speed it would run.
That being said I don't judge other ethics because I'm sure someone would find something wrong with what I do.
I mainly want people reading these think that it's a great round and they should try at that distance because they heard someone did it.

Nobody buys that.

Even if we accept for a minute that all your hunting is done at over 10,000' it doesn't change the fact that the Lapua is out of gas long before it hits 1,200yds.
Ignorance truly is bliss….

Yet all you're teaching is to take completely irresponsible shots on game far beyond the capabilities of the 6.5L.

This is as absurd as those peddling the 6.5 Need more as the ultimate 1,000yds monster killer.

Heck with your table that Bullet more than likely won't even open past 800. Do they sure but like most they have a set min so that you know it will open. No amount of bc from any bullet is gonna help either 6.5 get that far and have enough to do any damage with any repeatable usefulness

OK Einstein, how much energy does it take to kill an elk?
