I have not gotten my hands on a ATACR yet. I just told Shawn to get me one. But I know some of you have them and I have talked with a few. I am looking to hear field results or first hand testing of the new ATACR.

What are your impressions now that you have them in your hands?

How do they stack up next to the old tried and true NXS's?

Thanks
Jeff

First impression was " WOW!!! That thing is big!!" 34mm tube definitely stands out, optics are crisp and clear. As for field testing, waiting on edge to be completed.

I am surprised. I thought more members would have these by now? I have talked in private to a couple owners, but only 3 people willing to tell what they think?

Thanks

Jeff

I have one with the MOAR rectical, it's my 1st NF but I'm really liking it.
I have not had it out to shoot, but looking through it at all powers it is clear from the center all the way to the outside edges. I tried to find any spots from the 12 o'clock all the way to the 11:59 o'clock where it would haze out starting at 5x and moving all the way up to 25x....Nothing.
My Buddy has all the high end scopes and he is also quit impressed with the clarity of the glass.
I have had it at dusk and scoping from my house around the neighborhood as it gets dark, I haven't had to turn on the rectical yet to see it.
I'm hoping to get out West and ring it out in early Spring.

Forgot to add, I mounted it on a Larue LT 158-34 quick release so I can use the same rifle for my Thor 640 Thermal (you can also use a ST 104-34)

Thanks! And welcome to LRH. Have you tried to focus on anything close up like 50 yards? Just trying to see what kind of clarity it has on small objects close. Also can you focus in on something the size of a bullet hole at 200 or 300 yards?

Thank you for the post.

Im glad to "hear" about the lack of haze. I love my nightforces and I hate the haze in them. Have you viewed anything at long range and had issues with the MOAR thickness?

Ill look into that.

Ok guys, I know there are some more of these out there. Lets here from some guys that have ran them through the paces. I have heard reports of them not focusing up. Also one guy told me that if a deer stepped out at 50 yards you would not be able to tell what it was. He was being serious, not bashing the scope as he is truly concerned. Also that you could not see bullet holes well at 100 or 200 yards. I have also herd that one has been compared to well past 1000 yards side by side with the old NXS and the NXS has a sharper image every time, in any condition. It seems the ATACR is also picking up more mirage too.

I want to stress that this is only what I have heard. I have not gotten mine in my hands yet. As soon as I do I will be giving my review with a side by side to one of my NXS's. But for now I am trying to learn if it is a few of these or all that are having a problem.

Thanks for any first hand evaluations.

Jeff

Ok, question for the two new members in this thread. Both that joined up the same day, only have one post each, one answering the other. "1whobuys" and "1whocan shoot"

Are you brothers? Have you done anymore testing of the ATACR?

Jeff

My Brother has been dead for 28 years...
I haven't been out to shoot it yet, but I did take it outside today to see if I could make out bullet sized holes at 100+ yards...No Problem.
The Church across the road ranges at 107 yards, I could make out the mortar in the stone work and pick out flaws with ease, and that was right at dusk.
The Interstate is about 1200 yards down the road, I could zoom on the retaining walls and make out the detail with no problems.
It cleared right up with a small twist of the focus knob.

Maybe the people that are having focus issues didn't focus for parallax first like the manual says to.
I have no problem with 50 yard focus either.

1whobuys, I guess it is just a weird coincidence with 2 new members then.

Thank you for the report. I am relieved to hear it.

The report I got was from a shooter that has owned 17+ Nightforce scopes. He is an avid long range shooter and very aware of how to focus and even called NF to make sure or get suggestions. He is indeed focusing the eye piece as well as dialing out parallax. I feel there could be a couple scopes out there with issues. Time will tell.

Again thanks for your follow up.

I sure hope that is the case Jeff.

I would hate to have to order a couple more Premiers after waiting 7 months for the ones I just sold, if the ATACR doesn't measure up......

I will be waiting until the ATACR has a finer reticle option than the MOAR.

1whobuys is absolutely correct.

I had the chance to sit with Ray Dennis, the owner of NightForce at this last Shot Show and talk in depth about the new ATACTR Scopes. We talked about this very issue some of the guys have mentioned in regards to there focus.

The way I was told to set these very high end ATACR scopes when you get one is to:

Go in a dark room with scope in hand or on rifle, then set the parallax knob to infinity. The scope can be on any power, but you then need to turn on the illumination and then focus the eye piece so that the illuminated reticle appears perfect and crisp. removing your eye and coming back to it a few times to make sure. Then you can only worry about the parallax adjustment in the field.

Hope this helps guys! Also I have a brand new Demo unit if anyone is looking for one at a slight discount? Not trying to solicit your thread, just was trying to offer some help and potential savings.
