Anyone have any luck with a good .17HMR?

I love my 17 hmr its a ruger 77/17. Took my first coyote with it weekend before Halloween.. shot was far from long range he **** near walked to the rig to see what was going on...

I had a .17 last year - a volquartsen semi auto. Was ridiculously accurate. Sold it. Once the novelty wore off got tired of spending 20c per trigger pull for a limited cartridge that I shot like a 22lr. Went to a 20 Practical and much more fun and range for the same price per shot. Not knocking the 17 but its too expensive for what it is comprised of and cant roll your own.

Yeah I wouldn't use it for a dedicated yote gun for that reason alone. But I've always been told the best coyote gun is the one in your hand

How are you going to lean on the justification of a $.20 round, to a rifle that you spent at least $600 on??? LOL

Heard the Volquartsen was a quality rifle. You didn't care for the rifle?
Or just didn't like the cartridge?

It is a quality rifle and so is the cartridge. My rifle had a 25 rd mag and was semi auto with zero recoil. I could put 25 quick shots in a quarter at 100 yds off sandbags. I'd burn thru rounds like crazy shooting ground squirrels like I had a 22lr. I should have bought a bolt instead of the only semi auto made for the 17!

Kind of my dream rat rifle. The Savage bolt guns in 17HMR are impressive for the price. The Savage semi-auto was a ***.

yeah volquartsen was/is the only company to make a fully functional semi auto rifle that I remember. All their stuff is top notch. had a few of their pistols and one 10/22 22lr based rifle. Their 17hmr is a 10/22 based action that they make from scratch.

Now I see what your meaning! At least it was still cheaper than an AR! right! LOL

FYI, there is a new company called Garrow Firearms Development that makes/sells a complete 17 HMR upper and includes two 10 round mags for $599. I've talked to someone that has one and they not only shoot unbelievably well but they function/run flawlessly.

I am one of those guys that love the 17 HMR for many reasons, Mostly there inherent accuracy.

I also like the 22 mag but never got one that would shoot as well as I like
so when I shot my first 17 HMR, I was impressed.

I went the factory route, and was not impressed with the accuracy improvement over the 22 MAG even though it was twice as good.

I finally decided to test the little 17 with a custom barrel, Now we are talking !! the custom barrel turned the 3/4 to 1 MOA rifle into a less than 1/2 MOA rifle. I have since built 4 or 5 for family that will consistently shoot 10 rounds in less than a 1/2 inch group @ 100 yards and is sary accurate at 200 yards in good conditions.

I prefer the Anschutz action over all others (If you have the money, Weatherby makes their MK 22 bolt action using the Anschutz action in both 22 MAG and 17 HMR and they are Beautiful).

The biggest thing I have killed with the little 17, was a 200+pound hog
I have friends that take deer with them (I personally think it is to small). But hogs are a different story.

I use the 17 grain bullet for small game like squirrel's and the 20 grain bullet for the larger varmints like fox and coyotes.

J E, do you use Dan Lilja's barrels on your rimfire builds or something else and if something else, what have you found to work well? Also, have you ever bored a rimfire barrel and used a liner to rebarrel one, if so, how did it turn out?
