Am I nuts? VX6hd 3-18×50 vs. G7 NXS 5.5-22

The scope may have 75 moa total travel, but once you set the zero, regardless of where the reticle it is at in it's adjustment, 38 moa up is all you can get.

That is not correct. Once you set the zero then your elevation range is set. Until then you have 75 MOA of total travel. If you run enough base MOA you can literally bottom out on the min elevation and have 75 up. That requires a 40MOA or larger base.

Do you own one?
I do, it is a 2 revolution turret, but stops short of 2 full revs at 38 moa. That is all you have unless that has changed, I even called Leupold on it. A zero moa base is all this scope will ever need or be able to use.

Yes I have a vx6. It has 75 moa. 30mm tube

I'm considering selling or trading my Niteforce G7 NXS and moving to a Leupold VX6hd 3-18×50. My G7 currently sit atop a GW LR1000 in 7rm. I love this setup and its proven to be very accurate, durable and repeatable. The motive for going to leupold is to reduce overall weight of rig by 10 ounces. I will also be swapping out the McMillan stock in favor of new GW Clymer stock to further reduce weight of rig.
Will I be happy with the change? I primarily hunt mule deep in the backcountry. I limit shots on game to 500yrds but frequently shoot steel and rocks out to 1000. Thanks so much for your thoughts!

My VX6 is at Leupold repair as we speak for the second time. Reticle bounces to a 6" group.

I thought they have 75 MOA?

this is what we are discussing. Is this the same as yours?

The zl2 locking turret will only rotate 2 full turns from zero or 40 moa this has nothing to do with the base or the amount the erector can travel this is a feature of the zero lock turret. The 4-20 vx5 has a zl3 turret that will spin 60mins.

28.3 ounces. 31 for the comparable nxs. VX6 is 21 I believe. My NXS 5.5-22x56 is 32 according to the NF spec. It's weird how much heavier 10 ounces feels when in reality it isn't a lot, just feels like it on the rifle.

What power are the SFP NX8's rumored to be? The same as the current FFP?

Personally I love Leupold scopes. But if you love the scope you have stay with it. Scopes are just like any optics including eye glasses, they have to match your eyes or they will not work for you. That's why I say if you love your scope stay with it, I don't think 10oz is worth changing out a scope you love. I would have to agree with what was said in a prier post, if you want a lighter rifle keep this one and buy or build a lighter one and then you would have two grate rifles to use according to were you are hunting or shooting as well as a back up rifle.

I used to have 3 NXS (5.5-22x50) scopes and 2 March scopes on my 5 hunting rifles. Now I have 3 VX6s (3-18x44) and 2 Mark 5s (3.6-18x44).

The NF scopes where great, but big, heavy, and had more magnification than I wanted in a hunting rifle. For shots out to 1000 yds the vx6 has never let me down. On really long range rifles (1000+) I use the Mark5.
