Also give the 140 gr Nosler partion a try. I have used them in the past out of a 280 rem as a low recoil (2600 fps) loading after I had shoulder surgery and my elk went a whopping 5 yards.
Not sure why folks are giving the 7mm-08 a luke warm reception as an elk caliber. I would not hesitate to take a 7mm-08 on an elk hunt. You can easily get 2750 fps out of a 140 gr bullet and that is plenty for an elk under 300 yards. You don't have to bring out the big toys to kill an elk, and I've seen way more elk killed with a 270 then a 300 wm or greater.
