6.5x284 & 280ai comparison

Perhaps, but the OP...
I don't blame you— for shooting @1000 it's not necessary but for carrying adequate terminal energy/velocity that far for ethical hunting, it really is necessary though.
280 Ackley Improved with a 26" or longer barrel using 168 NABLR or similar would be the lightest that I would consider (I personally prefer this option be kept inside of 700 yards) for that distance— unless you are capable of shooting a cold bore shot into a Skoal can beyond that without ever missing. That's just my .02 though

Since you already have a .300, how about 25x284? 135gr Berger at an easy 3000fps will get you to 1000 yards with 1800fps, at sea level. Less recoil for excellent BC and plenty of punch for deer at reasonable long range hunting distances.

This thread is not about hunting ethics (as a long-time LRH member, you should know rule #1 by now) or if the OP is capable of shooting at 1KY. As he already noted in #40, he has a .300 WM should he need more energy at POI. Cheers!

Apologies—

6.5-284 with either the 140's/156's and a 300wm will accomplish most everything you'll likely be hunting. That is exactly the combo I'll be running once my 6.5-284 is finished being built. I'm planning on running the 156's (bought 1200) and I run the 215's in the 300wm. They are both deadly.

This has been my combo for over 10 years. Yes, it is a very effective combo! My 6.5x284 sees +80% use between the two for my hunting, mostly medium sized game to+1000 yards.

That is exactly the direction I am looking at. I have been using a 300WM for years, but looking at a Remage in 6.5x284. I have a M700
.270 to convert.
I think the 6.5 and 300 covers all NA game!
