6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

I recently started shooting 6.5-284. I noticed in reading a lot of guys shoot the 142SMK. Other than the weight is there a difference in 140 and 142 SMK's. If I have a good load for the 140's is it worth trying the 142's also?

yep, 142grsmk is like an lvd bullet. I switched over and got better groups load I'm using is 50.5/R-22 it's a mild load but gets better groups for me. Good Luck.

Thanks I'm at 50.0 R-22 and a 210M (140)Good groups, just felt they could tighten up a bit. I know they are all different but how are you seating them. Igot the 140's shooting best just touching.

The 142gr SMK has a substantially better B.C. than the 140gr SMK which I believe is why most people lean towards the 142 if they can. AFAIK, the 142 is not a 'true' VLD, but it flies close enough for gov't work.

Rimfire,
The best groups so far out of my 6.5-284 have been a 9.2" and 7.8" 10 shot groups at 1000 yards, in compition. This is with the SMK 142gr at .020" off the lands, 49.5gr of H4831SC. I am now working on loads with the Burger 140gr VLD, looks very promissing, getting better results on my test range than the SMK's. I cronographed the burgers this morning at an average of 3050fps. This is out of a 30" Lilja 9twist barrel.

Rimfire & roper
What size groups are we talking about?
The reason I ask is because I'm also in the process of load development for a 6.5-284. I did a ladder test on Sunday with Re22 and the 140SMK. Had 50.2 and 50.4 grains go into virtually the same hole, 49.8 and 50.0 oppened the four shot group up to .380" at 225 yds.
With IMR 4831 The gun shot a 4 shot .260 group at 100 yds, however this load leaves very faint ejector marks on the case.

I'm pretty pleased with those groups, but if you guys are shooting the 142s into smaller than that please let me know I'll definitly give them a try.
Thanks
Chris

Ran the ladder with 140 A-max 51.5 - 52.0 of H-4831sc. At 52.0 it shot several groups .2's and .3's and a few sub 1/2" 200 yard groups. About the time the humidity and temp hit the groups went to ****. I would have been more than happy with consistent groups larger than that since it's going to be used as a mid range deer crop damage. Same temp and humidity 140 SMK's and R-22 tightened up at 50.0 seated on lands and shoots .8 at 200 with fairly good consistency, need to play with seating. Just ordered 142 SMK's today hope to try them friday. fed 210M are working best. What primers are you using?

Re: 6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

For what it's worth....the 140s were designed for the guys doing 6.5-284s in a short action to fit in the mag and the 142s are the "true" long range performers.
For my money the Cauterucio 141 VLDs can't be beat in my 6.5 WSM.

How would the 141's work on deer at around 2900fps?

how fast does the 6.5 wsm push them?

Rimfire.......

Take a look at the Berger 140 VLD jammed into the lands and loaded with Ramshot "Magnum" powder. Standard deviation of 7! First group at 300 yards: .348" using Lapua cases 210M primer velocity out of 32 inch carbon fiber "Magnumlite" barrel: 3174fps. This powder gives great speed vs pressure and meters very well. Great cartridge, Good Luck

Re: 6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

The load I gave you is the one that Tim North of Broughton barrel gave me it's his load and he wins with it. I was just playing at 100 yd and group was in the 2's. Put rifle up and haven't shot it since. Didn't get drawn for an antelope so may use it later for PD. I tried some 140 and H-4831/H-3831sc and always seem to get one out alittle. I had order a barrel from Tim and was talking to him about my 6.5x284 so he gave me that load and it my rifle it's better than the 140smk. Your groups with the 140smk were better than I was getting mine were in the high 3's. Well good Luck

Re: 6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

Rimfire,
The Cauterucios are made on 30 cal Sierra jackets- a lot heavier than the J4 jacket. Len Backus has taken several deer I believe with the 7mm Cauterucios. The 6.5 is my BR gun so it don't go in the field. But it's pushing the 141s at 3150 out of a 26" barrel for 5 shot groups in the .2s.

Re: 6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

I use the 7mm 156 grain cauterucio's.

Best bullet I ever used.

Re: 6.5-284 140 or 142SMK\'s?????

The tech guy a sierra told me that the 140smk was designed for the foreign service rifle folks that shoot the 6.5-55 in swede rifles, the twist is too slow for the 142smk and the 140 was shorter to make them fly right. I am having real good luck with the 140 amax, but have been told that the 147 clinch river was shoting the best in several of the 6.5-284s that Billy Stevens has built. ebb
