Guys I am considering building a 6.5-06 Ackley using a 140gr VLD. I was wondering if anyone has any experience with this round. I was first considering a 6.5-08 Ackley or a 6.5X284 but after reading an article by John Bareness on the E.R Shaw Mk-VII 6.5-06 it really sparked an interest in building a 6.5-06 Ackley.

I tried to do a search but is does not like "6.5-06" or 6.5-06 Ackley.

Thanks for your Help

Hot 6mm's were just discussed on the hot 6mm thred and best long range coyte rifles. Look at those threads and the 240 gibbs also which is a blown out '06 case and gets higher velocities. My accuracy loads in the 6mm-06 imp ran around 3250 fps. I din't know what anyone else is getting.

great round easy to load for, re-22 seems to be the powder for the 6.5's on the '06 case.

just prime 25/06 cases, charge with a moderate 6.5/06 charge, seat a bullet and fire, fireforming is done.

Sounds like you are having fun chosing a new cartridge. Do you have specific performance goals in mind?

The reason I ask is because I built a 260 last summer which I have been doing load development for and I am finding that it is a great cartridge.

It is not as fast as a 6.5-06, 6.5-06AI or 6.5-284, but the maybe 100 fps you give up in speed you gain in barrel life. You can still get 2800 to 2900 fps with a 140 Berger and a 26 inch barrel from a 260, which is still pretty good.

Just something to consider ...

Long Time Long Ranger,
I have been a long time member/lurker and I am not sure if I am using the search criteria properly? I did a search for "6mm" thread and "best long range coyote rifles" and I am coming back with nothing? How far back are the threads and what heading are they under? What bullet were you using in your 6mm-06 IMP?

RR,
How long is your barrel?

Doug,
I have a few long action guns I could have rebarreled to the 6.5-06 Ackley. I did look at the 260rem but did not think you could achieve that speed with a 140geVLD.
I have just gained assess to a farm I will be able to shoot 800 to 1000ydsJ I was looking for something to shoot coyotes and maybe deer.

Again, Thanks for your Help

The Hot 6mm thread is in the bullets, barrels, and ballistics forum. I compared the 240 Gibbs and 264 Gibbs, and with 115 grain DTACS, the 6mm beats the 264 pretty good.

Harpy I am going to build a 6.5-06 AI on a savage action for next deer season. I plan to hunt with the 130 grain scirroccos or bergers. I am planning a 28" heavy sporter barrel and hope to get 3300 fps. My Nosler manual lists RL22 and N560 as highest velocity loads for the standard 6.5-06 but I plan on giving RL25 a try because the case still has a lot of room with those powders.

I was planning on the 6.5-284 but I understand it will not feed well from the Savage action designed for the 06 case.

good luck getting 3300 from the 6.5/06 AI, I can get 3300 from my 6.5 Gibbs with a 29.5" barrel, it has about 5-6 gr advantage in pwder capacity over the '06 case, but at 3300 fps, you ruin a case every shot. So now I'm shooting 3250 fps, with 61 gr of re-22, case life is ok, nothing great.

My nosler #6 manual lists the 130 grain accubond from a 6.5-06 at 3151 from a 24" barrel. That is with a 53 grain powder charge. I guesstimate the AI case should buy me 50 FPS and the 4" of barrel should get me an additional 100 fps. I am hoping that will put me right at or very close to 3300. I am also hoping rl 25 will allow a heavier charge and improves velocity a bit.

I'm building a 6.5-06 AI as well this year. In fact I got my reamer from Pacific Tool and Gauge yesterday. My Dies should be here in a week or so.

I'm building off a Remington 700 ADL classic Deluxe that was a "Safe Queen" and it hasn't seen much use. I found a Stainless Shilen Select Match bbl for really cheap on Midway (it was a inventory reduction sale). It's a light varmit contour and will finish at 26". It'll wear the Factory stock (I'll be bedding it as well) and it will get a trigger job as well as blue printing. I hope to buy a Bushnell 6500 for it and get the test loading done for this fall.

I wasn't really interested, so much, in top velocitys as I was in the fact it was something diffrent. I already have a .243 Win and a .243 AI, and I don't know any one here in Idaho that has a 6.5-06 AI. I'll be pleased if I can get 3200 FPS out of it. My .30-06 AI gets 3125fps with a 165g Sierra Gameking and 62g of H4350 with a 26" bbl. If I can beat that, I'll be happy. This will be a lighter gun than the .30-06 AI and I'll be shooting 120-130g bullets as the bbl is a 1-9" twist. It'll see use as a Deer/Antelope (if I draw) rifle and the .30-06 AI will be for Elk/Deer (when hunts overlap).

I was using the 107 matchking with the 6mm-06 AI. The AI is a very accurate rifle. Mine is a 26" barrel. I could get over 3300 with it but the best accuracy and case life fell right in the 3250 range with my gun. My Gibbs shoot faster with just as good accuracy so they get the most work. That 240 Gibbs is a wicked looking critter and shoots as fast as it looks. I am running the 107 over 3500 fps in it. Those threads can't be past the second page. We were talking about them Friday here on the first page. Either this one or basics or the one tyler said.
