What would be best, or highest velocity in a 20" 1-10 twist barrel? 308 Win or a 30-06? Will be shooting 180-215 grain bullets.

I wouldn't put a 20" barrel on a rifle when shooting heavies. A .308 would do fine shooting 160s but I think with a '06 the performance just isn't there for me to want to use one.

The 06 will beat the .308 for shooting heavy bullets for sure.

If thats the two you are looking at I would go with the 30-06.

20" is rather short though. Will still work fine. You will want to look @ a 1:9 twist though. Since you will not get the speed needed to fully stabilize the 215 Berger with a 20" barrel. with the 30-06 OR .308

truely limiting yourself with a 20 inch bbl.
03's had 22, m14 had 22, win mags are "suppose " to be 26.
all to get velocity.
yes we have better powders today.
06 shot 220s with a 1/10 but i am pretty sure is was a short fat bullet, not a vld.
i would do 24, 1/9.
my 1/10 24" 308 shoots 185 lapuas well

Going short barrel to run a suppressor. Will be used for hunting out to 400 yards. Mainly inside of 200 yards on elk. Was wanting to mainly shoot 200 grain Nosler Partitions and Barnns 175LRX Bullets.

In my 308, 24" i shoot a 195tmk at 2430fps, but have no problem getting it to 2550fps with varget. I've also made loads with 208 eldm, and 210 Berger lrbt, 200eldx, and 212eldx the node with my rifle is around the 2430-2450fps with them all, but it's easy to get to 2550 with the case capacity. I plan on experimenting with cfe223 to see if I can get to the next node, which should be around 2650fps. With 20" I think you'll still be able to get to 2500 FPS with varget, the 308 is a very efficient burning cartridge. If I had 2.95" magazine I'd probably be able to reach 2650fps with varget

I'm doing a TC Encore Barrel. I have both a 308 and 30-06 in the Pro Hunter 28" barrels. Each barrel is generous in freebore. Wanting to cut one down for use of a can. And only one. In general it seems the 30-06 is about 100fps faster +. Was thinking the 30-06 at 20" would still be a velocity of 2600fps with a 200 partition.

I'd cut the 308 barrel myself, but you know your rifle better than we do
