I'm doing load development in a 300 win mag for a friend of mine. It's a savage with a 26" heavy barrel. He's going elk hunting in 2 weeks and I have 2 loads worked up. 180 gr accubond shooting one ragged hole at 100 with 5 shots, and 210 gr lrab shooting 1/2" at 100. I'm not finished with the 210 gr and both bullets are loaded over 70 gr of h4831sc.

Personally I think the 180s will be fine for elk, but I have never used them over 400 yards. If I can get the 210s to shoot just as well would they be the better bullet?

We tried to get berger but everyone where I live is sold out and I don't have enough time to order any.

I'm sure the 180's will be fine, depending on range. The heavy bullets really shine at extended ranges. I have killed plenty with a 180gr bullet, before I was a hand loader but everything was close up. The 200+ grain bullets are a game changer due to the higher BC and high energy when they hit.

I think you're over thinking it. My opinion, both loads sound more than accurate enough for elk at medium ranges (>500 yards). And if he's just now getting this load, 2 weeks out, probably doesn't have enough experience with that load to go further than that anyway. At least for this hunt.

I'd go with the 180 AB. He'll have not problem.

That's what I thought, hes not a long range shooter, and I'll help him this weekend, but I don't think he's capable of shooting past 4-500.

My suggestion is use as heavy as you can get in an AB and stay off the shoulder. The crease just behind the shoulder and 4" below center in height for elk.

Thanks for the advice guys but like I said I'm just doing load development for a friend, I'm using h4831sc for the 210s as well, but I picked up a lb of imr 7977 tonight, would anyone have any experience with this powder.

Do you have access to Ken Waters' Pet Loads?

Broz & FEENIX have it wired. Put any appropriate bullet trough an elk's heart, and he'll have seconds to live. And when he hits dirt, he ain't gonna get up.

Is your friend hunting with a guide? Guides usually are pretty good at getting their hunters close to elk.

Best of luck to you.

BTW, if you want me to check Pet Loads for most accurate .300 Win Mag loads for you, let me know.

No I don't have access to pet loads, if there's any information on the 210 nosler lrab that would be wonderful. As for the guide, no its a diy hunt. I'm trying to maximize his distance in case he gets that shot. Personally I'm a big fan of heavy bullets, any personal experience with 180-210 bullets pros and cons at different ranges would be great. I have a few wsm cartridges 270,and 325 and also have an 8mm rem mag, but my longest shot has been on my caribou at 500 yards, so I'm no expert.

Thanks again guys.

I have the IMR 7977 but I have not had a chance to play with it yet. My go to powder for my .300 WM is the H4831SC and IMR 7828SSC a close second.

Good Morning 6MM06guy,

All data from a 24" barreled pre-64 Model 70:

Pet Loads doesn't list a 210 grain .300 WM load. For 200 grain loads, 71 grains of RL-22 was very accurate, FPS= 2783; with 72.5 as max; FPS = 2832

IMR-4831, 71 grains, FPS 2787, very accurate; 72 grains was max, FPS 2823.

Norma 205, 74 grains, 2900 FPS, accurate

180 grain, RL-22, 76 grains, FPS 3037

180 grain H-1000, 80 grains, FPS 2909, very accurate

180 grain H-1000 82 grains, FPS 3007

I load for my 7MM Rem Mag. for heavy bullets, H-4831 & RL-22 give best velocity and accuracy.

77grns of H1000 210 Ablr work for me sub MOA to 1000 yards, the 210 have done me good on elk at 700 yards
The 180s work great too I just like the hit of the 210s
