What powder is most likely to get over 3200fps. H1000, Retumbo, RL19, RL22, IMR 4831, or IMR 4350. Seems like the slowest powder would, but the Nosler manual seems to favor RL19. I am reloading for a friend, who says his 26" MarkV groups best above 3200 with 180grainers. We are using accubonds and Btips. Also have Weatherby Brass, and Rem 9.5's or Fed 215's.

Nosler shows H1000 with a slight edge in velocity over RL22. It's also more temp stable than 22. My guess would be Retumbo would beat H1000 in that velocity range. Either Retumbo or H1000 should get you close to 3200 in a 26" tube or maybe better.

I wouldn't be using any of the above powders.
The best powder in both the 300WinMag and Weathery is RE25, it can give you velocities in the range of 3400fps with safe pressures!
A good starting load is 83gr's, max is 87gr's. Fed215's seem to work the best in my rifles.
Retumbo and RE25 use almost exact weight charges, you can use the same starting loads with either, work up carefully and stop at the first signs of pressure, but I doubt you'll see any with either powder.

I would work a load up using Retumbo. It is quickly becoming my favorite powder.
I use it in my 25-06, 7STW, 300WM, 300 JAZZ. It has given me more velocity and lower extreme spreads on a regular basis. As stated it is also temperature stable.

Met a guy at the range the other day and he had loaded RL25 in his 7RM and had gotgood velocoities in the past with it. He loaded up a 100 and was at the range Sat when it was about 80. Was getting a stiff bolt on every shot. He asked me about the powder before he mentioned about the stiff bolt, and I told him I had heard it gave good velocoities but was (edit) not very temp stable (here on this site and from some friends who have used it). He said yeah, and told me what was happening. He wasn't a happy camper because this was going to be his antelope load. Had to go home and pull every bullet and start over. I recommended Retumbo and H1000. I wont use RL22 or RL25 because of the temp thing.

Just my $.02

Anyone have any velocity readings for me at given charge weights. I would love to compare to other Weatherby rifles especially given their similar jump to the lands issues.

my 300 wby has a 24 in bbl . 87.8 grain of H1000 , 215 primer , rem brass , 180 accubond , 3168 FPS .

same gun . 82.5 grain IMR7828 , 215 primer , rem brass , 180 accubond , 3150 FPS. Jim

I'm using H1000 and getting an average velocity of 3250fps with 180 Accubond. The accuracy at all distances is amazing however I have had serious problems with the bullet and believe that it does not hold together well. It has worked great on several white tail and mule deer, however only once have I had an exit wound and I have never retrieved any portion of the bullet, complete fragmentation. I will be changing the bullet but keeping the H1000.

DO NOT set a goal of 3400fps for your 300 wby and a 180 grain bullet. Having loaded for a quite a few I can tell you that any normal factory 300 wby that goes over 3300 fps with a 180 in a 26" barrel is treading on high pressure. I guess there is always the "1 in a million" gun that does the phenominal but I think MM owns it.

I have built loaded and shot many 300 wby's for 35 years and I have seen one go over 3400 fps and I own it. 86 grains of 7828 is a very accurate load in most rifles and will get you well over 3200 fps. RE25 is another good powder. The ones you listed are good powders just not best for going over 3200 accurately in this cartridge. 82 grains of H-4831 is my all time favorite accuracy load for the 300 wby. It will get you just over 3200 fps in most rifles. 7828 will get you there with less pressure and good accuracy.

Kraky,
I have pressure testing equipment, and I can tell you that even factory loadings with 180gr bullets at 3250fps are on the low side, contrary to what most say about Weatherby factory loads being HOT!
The difference is in how they're measured, SAAMI and CIP measure differently, and my testing has shown that you can get above 3400fps with the 300Wby depending on the powder used!

I do not advocate doing so without pressure testing equipment, that is why I didn't put up the load data, just stating that this cartridge is perfectly capable of such speeds!

The same as the 270Wby I own, it can get 3500fps with 130gr bullets, as does factory ammo, but if you look at any US data, it's a pipe dream according to them!

Most any 270 wby with a 26" or longer barrel will push a 130 grain bullet over 3500 fps. But that is pretty incredible velocity in a 300 wby. I have chronographed one rifle in 40 years that would go over 3400 fps with a 180. My 300 ultramags only get 3450 fps with max loads in 28" barrels.
