I'm starting to assemble the parts for a 280AI build. Will be a #4 or #5 26" BBL. I want to shoot heavies. I was holding off on the build b/c brass and powder have been non-existant for like 2-3 years.. now starting to see some flow again. So what powders do you guys recommend? I've seen Retumbo, 4831SC, H1000, H4350, IMR 7828SSC. The IMR7828 is all I can seem to find at the moment, is this a good option? Is IMR 4831 the same as Hogdons, just not in a short cut?

Edit: Looking for something with good temp stability as I shoot from 110 degrees to 0 degrees F.

Thanks,
Hawk

I load for a friends 280AI. I am running Retumbo with 168 Berger VLDs. It's about 2830 fps. under a .5 moa. He hasn't got anything long range yet, but it's been bang flop on at least 3 whitetails so far. I am sure we could get more speed out of it if tried some other powders. That was the 5th or 6th combo we tried and he was happy with it. He wanted a temp stable powder.

My experience with Retumbo, H4831SC, H1000, H4350, and IMR 7828SSC is that they are all temp stable for Montana weather. No IMR 4831 is NOT the same as H4831.

I use 55.5 GR of IMR 4831 with 160NAB , and fed 210M in my Cooper ,and it is a tack driver I have never tried 180 GR bullets but did try many powders, and 4831 is what mine likes. Last week I shot a 3.5 inch group off bi pod at 700yards I thought that was fairly good for me .

58.5 gr of H4831SC and 168 Berger classic hunters. Works really nice in my Cooper model 52 with a 24" barrel. Not overly fast, but not bad at 2880 fps.

I run 7828 in my 30-06AI under 185 Juggernauts with great success.

The 280AI is not too different from the capacity of the 7SAUM. Powders that run well in the SAUM should work well in the 280AI.

My 7WSM (more case capacity than either the 280AI or 7SAUM) runs like a champ on both H1000 and H4831SC (I never tried 7828 in it). 7828 is not too different from H1000 in the burn rate charts, so it should be good to go.
