Real world speed with a 22" and 140's 160's. Wanting to build a lighter shorter rifle ( already
have a 9# 7 mag) and will be running a can.

Just curious if anyone has information on what the difference in velocity would be between a 22” barrel and a 24” barrel for the 280 AI? I’ve been contemplating a .280 AI build four zones time, but just saw that savage offers that caliber in the Ultralight. It has a 22 barrel, whereas I was...

Just FYI, I have 2 24" barreled Coopers.
145 grain handloads in one at 3050 FPS & 160 grain handloads in the other at 2960 FPS. They are both super accurate and could be pushed quite a bit faster but these bullets and velocities have me best combo of speed and accuracy

L.Sherm gave you the best. Rl26 excellent too speed wise. I followed his advice and eliminated the little flyer I was getting with 26. Now if all you have is 26 go for it!! You can't ride a horse that's not in the stable.

My 22" bbl gets 2900fps with a 160gr Partition & R19. Accuracy is excellent with 5/8" groups. I get pretty much the same with IMR 4831. Kinda makes sense that slower powders need more barrel length for max velocity.

I believe powder is burnt 90+% at 16" in all but the most extreme circumstances.

Interesting! It would seem that to burn the remaining 10%, more bbl is needed - but how much? I've also often wondered how much damage muzzle flash does to the crown. Seems the powder manufacturers would have these answers.

I talked with a guy at tbac suppressors about this subject, he said powder burn / barrel length is largely a wives tale that the normal guy should not waste his time worrying about. He also stated "powder that gives highest velocity with long barrels almost always gives highest velocity with short barrels".
