270 WIN BEST POWDER ELK

GB -
Fun to read accounting of your hunting accomplishments. I don't care to assume any thing regarding reaching your successful load but you seem to prefer 130 partitions over 150s. I seriously doubt you are about to change to 150 Partitions. But can you share your thoughts on the velocity / terminal effect questions a reloader / hunter should consider for those two Partition bullet weights with the 270 Win.

I have been around 150+ deer taken by 270 with 130 Gr Sierra STBT loaded with IMR 4831. It did the job and not much in the way of blood shot meat. The shots were from any direction you can think about. P.S. H4831 wasn't around at that time. I have always like the 130 Sierra for deer. The hunter I hunted with are all gone now. I am the last of that group. It's not a powder burner either. If I was reloading the round. I would use H4831SC the weather doesn't have much effect on it.

Same load I used with excellent results!

If you are going to run the 133g Sledge Hammer I would first try H4831sc. Start at 55g and work up. I would expect to see about 3150 fsp on the top end.

How far are the expected shots?

Just took a look at Hodgdon data. If you can get StaBALL 6.5 you should be able to get 3200 fps easily. Start at 52g and work up.

Been loading for .270 Win. in a Weatherby Ultralight and a Win Model 70 Super Grade. I will not change my long time Whitetail Deer load, which is 59.5 Grns of H 4831 or 4831SC with a 130 Grn Nosler Ballistic tip, in light ,matched ,Winchester cases.( 185 to 187 range). I have a 270 Heavy Hart Barrel custom with an 8 twist , shot it only once used 55.0 Grns H4831SC with the 150 Grn Nosler LR Accubonds, and it shot really well at 300 yards. I also have 270 Weatherby Mag, and would use that same powder with a 150 Grn LR Accubond, but I would love to try R 26 in that rifle ,with that bullet ,soon. I do not yet have a load for the Berger 170 grn bullet . Any Suggestions welcome. Thank You, Lenny

I loaded the Hammer 145 Sledge Hammer for my son in law last year, very pleased with the results. Short notice, but worked up to 56 grains of H4831sc, Federal 215 primer right at 2900 fps. I suspect we can get a couple of more grains now we have time and scare 3000 fps. His rifle is basically the same as OP.
