18” 7 saum

Looking at putting an 18" proof barrel on my bighorn origin long action. I'm definitely doing 7 saum. 18" and a suppressor will put me around 25" overall. That's sounds very appealing. Anybody out here have a short saum? I'm thinking h4831sc or h4350 and a 162,168 bullet weight. I'm hoping to get 2800 fps. I may also try 180's and rl26 just to see what it would do but I'm guessing it'll be a bit slow. This is going to be my primary backcountry hunting rifle. I'd like to get a good 6-700 yards and still get good bullet expansion.

I'd personally run the 180s. With 168s being second in line and If you're after all the velocity you can get rl26 is going to be what you want. Id be surprised to see 2800+ at 18" with 4350. Might make it there with rl26

Yeah I think it'll get there with the 162-168's but not the 180's was kinda my thought. Is that what your thinking? I guess the suppressor may add a few fps

I have a 20" 7saum. I wouldn't go shorter. 20 is perfect in my opinion. I am running 180eldms with h1000 and just finished load development with 145 ceb lazers with h4350.

2750 jumped to 2775 when barrel broke in. That's a stout load, definitely pushing it.

That pretty much exactly what I would expect. I'm thinking an 18" will do right around 2700. Maybe 2725. I think the saum only looses 20-25 fps per barrel inch roughly. I would go 20" but we can't find one. I can go 22" but that's getting pretty long. I'd get 2800-2825 out of a 24". 4" for 100 fps probably isn't worth the length

I have a 22" suppressed and don't mind it. I think 20" is the sweet spot, and that's what I would have done if I could have found a barrel available in time for last year's hunts. My 22" is getting 2910 with 175 ELD-X, 2940 with 168 VLDs, and 3010 with 155 Hammers. All with RL-23.

I have loads with all three bullets mentioned above that are less than 1/2 MOA. I have a legit 5-shot group with the VLDs that is in the .2s

I have considered doing the same thing as original poster except with a .300RSAUM. If you shot it with a 20 inch barrel and no suppressor will the blast be deafening? Have a 24 inch factory barrel on a 700, but picked an extra identical barrel up from classifieds here cheap so have a chance to try it inexpensively I think.

Is the barrel already chambered in 300 saum?

yes, the extra barrel is an identical factory barrel to what is on the gun now.
