weatherby mark v vs remington 700 sps ss

Everyone stating weatherby's cant shoot under 1.5MOA with factory loads must not have done much shooting. I am by no means an experienced pro but I have seen many vanguards, let alone mark Vs shoot right around 1MOA or a bit better with certain factory loads.

To the original poster...YES there are cheaper and more types 308 Factory loads making it EASIER to find a better shooting factory load in a particular gun, HOWEVER, if this is your friend you are trading with and not a gun shop...you are getting ripped off unless he is throwing something else in with the deal. A Remington SPS tactical goes for like 650 new...your Mark V goes for like 800 USED for a basic mark V...even more if it is a higher end mark 5.
SELL your Mark V and buy a NEW SPS and pocket the difference in cash.

OR Better yet...sell your MARK V and with the cash you might be able to afford a brand new Remington Sendero in 300 WIN MAG which also has readily available ammo and will be an AWESOME long range gun... lots of guys on here buy the senderos. They are great rifles.

+ ! gun)

I would be trading with the local gunshop which is where I bought the mark v for 600 new. I would be trading for a sps varmint stainless brand new with a rail on it not my buddies tactical sorry for the mix up

Am I missing something here....how in the heck did you get a Mark V for 600 bucks NEW!?!?! Anyways, The SPS tacticals are decent rifles but remember, every rifle shoots differently. Just because your buddies SPS is a tac driver doesnt mean another SPS with the same rounds will be a tac driver. It is all luck of the draw. You might want to look into something that gives you the 1MOA guarentee like a tikka T3. They almost always actually get the 1MOA accuracy they state(if not better) and if they dont, Tikka is very good about either fixing the rifle or exchanging for another rifle that will get 1 MOA.

I got it for so cheap because it was a second send out or something. First time weatherby sent it out the retailer found something wrong with it so sent it back. Weatherby fixed the problem and sent it back out to the local gun guy. That's what he told me why it was so cheap but that didn't make muchsense to me since it was fixed and still new

Deener- i was amzed at the number and brands of 308 ammo loaded with 165, 168 and 175 grain bullets when i went into cableas. these will do great in a rem 700 heavy barrel for targets. also when and if you reload the 308 i have found is very forgiving in find decent loads for. i shoot f-class my rifle does real well. Varberger- the 7mm factory ammo is expensive he would probably have to go through a bunch to find a good load , tough with a magnum without a brake.

Ok, I agree with you in the case of ammo prices and/or finding a good load. Also about regular training with a highpowered 7 Wby without a brake. Both might hurt...;-) I was just wondering how someone could think about trading a new highend product like the Wby Mk V for something like a Rem SPS (BTW,a decent low budget gun). That's still over my horizon. :)

I shoot 7mm Weatherby without a brake. A lot. No problems at all for me.
Now, it's not my 243 or my 270 Win, but it doesn't bother me at all. I guess I'm just used to it.

We own several 7mm Weatherbys. If you look around there is less expensive ammo, but I wouldn't really shoot one just to "go shooting." Buy a 22LR, 17HMR or 223 if you want to shoot a lot. Ammo is a lot less expensive even in the current shooting/political climate, and then you can have as much trigger time as you want. If you're not reloading even the 308 will get expensive to shoot after a while.

I've accumulated a few different factory loads for our rifles, so it's less of a problem for me to find one that works. And, I also handload for the one that gets shot the most. See attached picture for its accuracy - just over half an inch at 100 yards.

I'd be happy to trade you that 7mm Wby for a 308 too. :D Just let me know where to send the Remington.

I agree with this statement! I wouldnt trade but if I really didnt want the Mark V due to caliber I would try my luck at selling it used for a decent amount of cash. You will always get more money selling used than trade in on another rifle. Gun shops around here seem to give you about half the value of your rifle selling used, for example...you might get 700-800 for a rifle selling used where as a gun shop will only give you like 400-450 on trade. Just my two cents.

Yep . and if he is going to shoot targets he should get a target rifle. at least a 5-r equivalent.

Deener - where are you ? i would just buy ammo and shoot his .308. Mud - i do not agree that the mark V is a .5 inch gun. especially with out handloads . the 300 weatherby mark v i shot barely did 2"
My AccuMark shot sub-MOA with factory loaded Weatherby brand 110 NAB's...

He asked COULD it be a 1/2 MOA gun. I said that it could be. Bed the action and lug, float the barrel, and it should be a sub-MOA shooter, even with factory ammo. I don't know about 1/2 MOA, but you might squeeze a few groups out of it that are that tight.

I agree to 100%
In my opinion, the thread is starting to get a little bit ridiculous. We're going to make or try to make a (unfair) comparison between two almost different products. That's caused by Deener's economical objections… On one side the high-end product with an equivalent reputation, and on the other a decent gun but still low budget. As we all know and have written will it be no problem at all getting the Wby filling the "gap". Little stock work (if necessary/ I doubt it) and muzzle break. Great deal? No! Costs are reasonable, and all of us (almost) would purchase the Wby for the purpose of LRH without hesitating.

Deener- you need to get what you want. you stated you wanted to "push your limits". having shot good target rifles, me and other will try to get you to spend more and reload . given your budget and objectives a 700 heavy barrel is a place to start. Mud - a 500$ remington does not compare very equally to an accumark . a 5-r yes. sendero yes. even the Mark v sporter he has is less and made different than an accumark. his budget is already tight so making the sporter more like an accumark is probably not in the cards.

He could probably have Weatherby rebarrel it with an Accumark barrel for $350-400...And you can buy the B&C Accumark stock from Stockey's for around $285.

If you had a used Mark V you had not much money invested in, you could easilly make it an Accumark for under $750.

That would only be slightly more than his SPS Tactical would cost him, and it would be a LRH magnum for hunting and shooting.

In the end, it is the OP's decision....I just hate to see a Mark V 7mm Wby go out like a chump.

How much is the local GS owner offering you trade-in for your Mark V 7mm Wby? I might be interested in buying it for that amount, if my local FFL will accepts transfers from individuals.

Mud- taking his 700-800$ rifle and add 750$ of add -ons i bet it will shoot darn good . if i take a rem 700 (350$) add a barrel 450$ and a stock (199$) it will choot too. doubting his budget is going to allow it.
