Need Some Advice-.270wsm, .300wsm, 7mmRUM

I don't want to insult anyone but I'd just flat out avoid 7RM. It was fine in it's day but there are so many non-belted cartridges that are just as good or better choices.

. For a go to rifle, my choice would be the 300, especially if elk will be hunted. For any WSM, I highly recommend a Sub MOA Vanguard. IMO, a much better rifle than the average Remmington.

I have to second MontanaRiflemans post the rifle is key here as you do not re load. The Vanguard is the best coice IMO for a sub 1k rig that will hold its own agnist any custom job out to 500 yards. Its qualty far surpasses that of the rem out of the box. It has an intigral recoil lug, tunable trigger, a one peice bolt and a Sako style extractor. the tolerences are much more in spec with the Vanguard then the Rem as well.

The 300wsm would be my pic of the rounds you mentioned but if it where me I would go with the 300 win mag and there are a bit more choices in the factory ammo department. For instance Black hills and HSM both offer a 180g Barnes bullets in there ammo for the 300 win mag. That is some dam good factory ammo.

+1 with Roaddog1m. It was/is a great cartrige, but as far as 7mm's go there are far better 7mm cartriges on the market now.(most involve hand loading however)
But as recently posetd, a long action gives more futre options.
Look, I love my .270wsm. Its an awesome rifle and caliber, but Im very limmited on bullett selection. If you want a smaller bullet that goes realy fast go with the .270wsm and 150 gr pills going over 3,000 fps with factory ammo.
A 300wsm would be a better all round period with the vast array of bullet wt.'s and huge availability from many manufacturers, but 180 gr pills are the prefered standard. why dont you want to shoot a 180? I guess theres always a 7wsm. Anyway $25.00-50.00 per box depending on brand and bullet for shortmag ammo. And its everywhere

I guess my take from everyone's thoughts is that it has a better factory ammo selection than the .270wsm??Also, for people who own the .300wsm? What is the typical grain that people shoot from it? 180? That seems a little bit overkill for deer/antelope sized game, but maybe I'm wrong. Also, I know it's personal preference, but do most guys muzzle break them?I guess I have always looked at heavier grain bullets, i.e. the 180 gr, to be used for larger game? Living in UT you don't get the chance to hunt elk every year unless you enjoy spike hunting, so I really forsee maybe ever using this rifle for elk maybe but a couple times. Thanks again,Justin

Someday, maybe you can get a 270 WSM as a second huntuing rifle for antelope and maybe deer. But IMO, there is no such thing as overkill. First rifle, 300, second rifle 270. I have shot antelope with my 300 WSM and 180 bullets and it was no differnt than shooting then with 120, 150 and 160 bullets out of my 7 RM. For big bucks, I would still prefer a 300. As far as the 180 bullet goes, it's just going to have a little better BC and thump. Just a little more advantage over a lighter bullet and I always look for the advantage. Having said that, I would pick the bullet that shoots most accurately, starting with the bigger and higher BC ones. The 165 and 150 bullets will kill too.

On brakes, that's a personal choice. I don't like them and I shoot both the 300 RUM and 300 WSM without them. In the field you would need to either be wearing your earplugs or put earplugs in before you shoot. Neither of which appeals to me. If I have a chance to put earplugs in I will, but that's not always the case. I use a slip-on recoil pad for practice shooting and it works great. I can shoot those rifles all day without a brake.

The 300. wsm has fantastic down range performance. Everyone know how good a 300. win mag is and for down range performance its really great cartridge. The 300. wsm is literally almost identical to the 300.win maybe just a few numbers off but barely. It would be good down range.

I really like my 300WSM.My bullet choice for it is a 165gr Hornady Interbond.

I have both a .270 and .300 WSM, and wouldn't trade either one. That being said, if I had an elk tag in my pack, I'd be carrying the .300 every time over the .270. Bigger critter, bigger stick!

don't let cost of ammo make your decision. if as you said you will only be hunting with it how much ammo do you plan to shoot? If all you will do is sight it in, do some practice etc. go for the rifle that you like best. Agreed that if you want an all around rifle, go for the 300 WSM. You can get ammo in many weights suitable for everything from varmints to elk.

I am one of the many that has converted to the 300 wsm. Its a very versitle caliber and I love it.

All we hunt with rifles are whitetail and hog. Im considering the 300 wsm, 270 wsm and a 7rem mag in a Browning A bolt Medallion or a Savage 14/114 American Classic. Open to all suggestions on calibers and brands no matter the price.

Build a 7mmstw and load for it. Fast accurate, easy to load for.

If you don't load I'd go 7rem or 300 win.

300wsm, it is truly the new 3006, but wheras the 06 is dropping off at 400 your 300wsm is still moving. You can use a 150 grain TTSX or BST for deer/antelop/sheep/goats and shoot flatter than the other calibers less the 300 RUM it is about an inch flatter but will beat the **** out of you unless you have a 12# rifle which is zero fun. the 180 grain for bear/Elk/Moose and you have it all covered. Yes its sexy to have a 257 roberts for goats, 3006 for deer, 300 for elk, but one gun, one caliber makes you a deadly dude.gun)
