So I had my tikka chamber cut longer since it was short from the factory and now I'm starting load developement for it. so my question is this I am using IMR 4350 with 100 gr Partitions and when looking for a starting point my nosler book says 51 grains is max, Sierra book said 54 and hodgon site I believe said 54.3 grains is max. so I started with 50.5 grains which seems like a good starting point but why does nosler say this is .5 grains under max? Also i've heard h4831 is the go to powder for 25-06's but 4350 has higher rated velocities and am a huge fan of 4350. all input and knowledge is appreciated...Corey

I have worked with the 25-06 for about 25 years and shot a lot of combos. Standard go to load with any 100 gr bullet has been 52 grs IMR 4350. The 100 gr Sierra Game King is one accurate deer size game killer. I do prefer the 117 gr Sierra Pro Hunter and 49 grs IMR 4350, CCI 250 primer in a Rem case in my current 25-06. Rem 700 #6 Shilen 26" SS barrel 3000 fps. This rifle for some reason does not like BT bullets but shoots this FB like a house a fire. The Nosler Partition is not the most accurate bullet going but usually will stay within minute of deer accuracy. H-4831 usually does better with 115 to 120 gr bullets in the velocity department but not by much over IMR 4350. If you can't get the 100 Partition to shoot like you want it and you want a comparable tough bullet try the 110 Nosler Accubond. For deer size game you don't need these premium $$$ bullets. Hundreds of dead and eaten deer can attest to the effectiveness of plain Jane Sierra bullets around my house. BANG FLOP 99% of the time if you put one in a shoulder. :D

Thanks, I personally have never used Sierra bullets. I have been happy with nosler but will definetly give Sierra's a try. My gun is a Tikka with a 22" barrel so I have some velocity concerns thats why I am starting with the 100 gr bullet. I figure your 4550 powder is a typo also or Im out of the loop on that powder. Thanks

My 2506 likes 115 vld's and H1000. I also had good luck with 110 grain accubonds, but I don't remember which powder I was using at the time.

My wife's 25-06 is a 700 MTN rifle and they only put those 22" barrels on them as in your case also. The only bullet I have shot in it from coyotes, deer, antelope, to elk has been 120 gr. Nosler Partitions. Here's what I've been using and it chronographs at 3000 fps also! That kind of surpised me, but that's what I'm getting without any pressure signs.

IMR4350 49.0 gr.s
Nosler 120 gr. Partition
Winchester case
Federal 210 primer

That 110 gr. Accubond would be another great bullet for you to try. I just haven't played with it much yet, but plan to in the future. H4831SC as stated is a good powder too for this round.

RT2506 pretty much summed it up..They all have a little different appetite...But for me IMR 4350, H4831 & H4831sc seem to work well in all three of my 25-06s.....However each one has a different taste...

The first 25-06 I started with was a 700 BDL about 30 years ago...It has seen many different bullet/powder combinations over the years and now is becoming a little tired with thousands upon thousands of rounds down the tube....At its best the factory barrel liked 110 accubonds and 120 speer SPBTs with IMR 4350 or H4831...The Rem has never been able to swallow and digest a 115 VLD, no matter what the chaser.....This winter Ms. Remington is most likely going into surgery for a complete makeover and will re-enter the world looking like a 6.5-06 or maybe as a .260....There are a couple of other 25-06s & .260s in the gun safe that are starting to make him look, lets say physically challenged....

The 24" Shaw barreled Savage likes the 115 VLDs and 117 Hornady SPBTs with either powder but the 26" Douglas barreled Sav loves the VLDs and IMR 4350....While trying a shorter COAL for my Rem in the Douglas I discovered that the Douglas likes those VLDs .100 of the lands and works best at about .045 to .055....It spits out the 115s at slightly over 3100 with no pressure signs into tiny little groups when pushed with 52 grains of IMR4350.....Remember start out low

Randy

Sorry it was a typo on the "IMR4550" I corrected it. It is IMR 4350.

Don't worry about loosing a little velocity with a 22" barrel it will only effect your drop slightly at long range. The old 257 Roberts as well as most any 25 cal from 250 Savage up is a deer size game killing machine. :D

i just got a sendero 25-06. so far the gun seems to like rl22 powder the best. i have used 115 vld's and 110 accubonds. the gun shot the h4831 ok, between .75 and 1 moa. but rl 22 gets it under .5 moa . just have to try a few and see. im just starting with this caliber so certainlt no expert at all, but from reading h4350, 4831, rl 19 & 22 and imr7828 are some of the powders people seem to like.

I only hunt deer with my 25-06 using the 85 grain ballistic tips
with 4064 50.0 gr. 3790 fps
or 3100 60.0 gr. 3570 fps
both loads give me one hole groups.

I shoot 115vlds out of my 700sps. It seems to like them @ 2.723 or .010 off the lands w/ 51.0grns of imr4350. Its no great shooter but it shoots about .75 moa(havent measured groups). I'm gunna try some BR primers with this load and see what happens. Then I'm gunna load up some h4831, IMR 4831 and might try some IMR7828.

I still have some 110 accubonds and some 117 ssts to try too. Just haven't had much time to do any shooting here lately but I'll get around to it. IF weather clears up I might get a chance to do a little shooting tomorrow and pull out the chrono.

I'm running 54gr of H4831sc and the Berger 115gr VLD with Remmington 9 1/2 primers(will be trying the Federal Premium match grade primers next). I'm averaging 3028fps, not fast but getting consistant 0.3 to 0.6 groups at 100 yds. Have to be very careful and measure from the lands when seating(I'm seating mine .005 off the lands) as I have found a wide variation of length on these VLD's( as much as .015). Brad

Well I went out and shot this weekend with the load and it flattened my primers and on the 3rd shot it actually splt the neck. ***...so I am now back to the drawing board. no heavy bolt lift bet definetly flatened primers.

how far did you go? I didnt notice your stopping point.

I started seeing that the bolt starting getting a little tight with 51.5 which wasnt very noticeable and @ 52 it was worse so I backed back off to 51 which shot better anyway.

That was with the IMR4350 and CCI 200 primers in nosler brass.

It was my starting load of 50.5 that it happened, Thats why I 'm frusturated. I'm starting to think my Tikka is cursed....
