Hi all! I'm new to the forums, but all the information I have gathered here is great and that's why I have come here to ask for help. I currently haves sako 300 win mag for elk and deer hunting with a nikon 3-9 on it. Im looking to start shooting out to 800 yards with it and I know it's plenty capable but I need more out of a scope. Iv been researching and I want to stay around or under the $1000 mark. Prefer to go wit turret adjustable scope. Iv been looking at ziess-leupold-and vortex to start and I know 3-9 isn't enough power for those distances. Is a 4.5-14 or 16 enough or do I need more? Any help I can get on a quality long distance turret scope would be great! Thanks

A 4.5 -14 Leupold would be an awsome 800 yard scope. Low enough power to drag through the bush and plenty of powere when you need it. It is up to you weather or not you go with a 50mm objective lense, but FOR SURE go with a 30 mm main tube and the turrets!!

But, before you buy the scope, I would make sure you have enough money for a quality range finder. That, my friend, is more important than the scope for long range shooting.

Just my .02.

I completely agree with that reply! I use a Leupold 4.5-14 Mark 4 that has the target turrets as well as the mil dots. Mil dots can be used for estimating range however it would be difficult to get an accurate reading based on not all elk are the same size and you gotta get them to stand still long enough to dope them well. As for range finders, I use the Leupold RX-1000. I have never gotten a 1,000 yards out of it, its ranging capabilities depends on how good of terrain you are looking at. Typically, I can 700 out of it.
Back to scopes. The scope I have will cost a little more than $1000 but I think it is a good one. I like the mil dots because it gives me the option to use hold a hold off or I can dial it in on my turrets. For example, if I range a critter at 500 yards I can either dial in 7 MOA or I can hold over 2 mils.

Ok so Iv kinda got in narrowed down to vortex or leupold. Anyone used the new leupold vx3 CDs ? I'm just looking for somping that's simple to dail up shooting between 200-800. I don't know much about either of these scopes and I'd like the Windage option also. Thanks

Something like a Leupold 4.5-14 would work very fine for you. Get the 50mm OBJ though as it's better in low light.
