Shawn,

I just recieved and watched your reloading DVD. I am really glad I purchased it. I have been reloading for a few years but have been looking at stepping up the precision of my ammo and was going crazy with all things that you can do to make your rounds the best they can be. So between all the different case prep steps and equipment out there, throw in the different methods of testing to establish "your" best load, I was on info overload. Taking me through your process was exactly what I needed, THANK YOU. I do have a few questions however.

1. Concerning case trimming. Do you trim all cases to the shortest length or just take every case down till it gets a flush cut? After this initial cut do let all the brass grow until that specific saami cartridge spec or determine a spefic length for that specific firearm? Concerning equipment to trim cases. I dont have a case trimmer at this time and may have a little trouble picking one up right away, Is the lee case trimmer (the little caliber specific ones that screw on to a shell holder and has a specific length cutter for that caliber that hooks up to a drill) appropraite? Or would I be wasting my time with this piece of equipment and should I just figure out a way to get an rcbs type trimmer, just without the power adapter for now as that attachment is outside the budget.

2. When your testing your loads you describe your process quite well my only question is what distance are you shooting groups at? I looks like 100, judging by groups size so if this the case have you found 100 to be perfectly adequate or is 200, 300... better?

Thank you for producing this DVD it has really helped me to establish my reloading procedure.

Shawn,
Just noticed this post-Good for you.
BTW-my buddy who ordered a 6.5-284 rifle from you shot it for the first time the other day and I guessed the MV and drop and drift, and put him on steel with first shot connections at 500 and 1K-To bad your rifles don't shoot good. :)
It definitely put a grin on his face.
I guess I need to get a copy coming my way.

Shawn,
Edit to the trimmer question I was picking up the hornady OAL gauge today and saw an rcbs trim pro manual case trimmer and it wasn't as expensive as I had remembered, I must have been thinking about the unit with power adapter. So I picked one up so the lee trimmer question isn't really applicable anymore, at least to me. Thank you

pyroducksx3,

On case trimming, I simply cut them all the same length to make them even. I let the length grow to withing .004-.005" of the chamber length then trim them all back to a specific trim length. Hope thisanswers your question. We almost always do initial load work at 100 yards because it is handy for us.

Jmden,

1. If you oal is that tight your good to go.
2. The 300 SMK seemsto run best at -005"-.010" butit is not very sensitive to OAL form what I have seen.
3. Never (How often do you anneal EDGE cases?)

4. No I just run them through the tumbler.
5. Walnut
6. Pro Chrono

Glad you liked it.

Hi Shawn,

I note in No.3 that you "Never" neck anneal cases.
May I ask why as I found that after my third reload my groups opened up with varying neck tension with my 338/378 Weatherby, so thought you'd be in the same boat.

Regards

Ridge

Shawn,

What happened when you tried Retumbo in the EDGE, assuming you did try it? Did it have higher velocity than H1000, but worse ES than H1000?

Jon

I think I may have missed why you graphite the necks before seating the bullet... The DVD said you would get back to it later but I didn't catch any further info on it.

Thanks

this graphite, don't corrupted the powder or primer??

I always brush air the inside of the case before the primer and powder to removed dush and .....it's uselless?

thk u

Garfield,

Graphite is applied as a coating on the powder granules to control the burning rate of rifle powder and as such what ever so small amount is introduced into the load I would not be concerned about it corrupting the powder.
It is the same stuff your rifle powder is coated with.
This is why Retumbo is a slower burning and "dirtier" powder compared to H-1000.
Hope this explains things and gives you peace of mind.

Cheers

Ridge
