Typically what bullet does a .308 like

Roninflag - I don't know but that the 308 may well be capable of taking an Ibex reliably at 500 yds and perhaps 800 yds or more. The key is to hit what you're aiming at which the right shooter and ammo should be quite capable of.

As Eichele points out, better bullets and faster twists make it a venerable weapon in the right hands.

The big magnums may melt a hole in a piece of steel. But, that's not much good if you don't hit what you're aiming at.

yes we have sucsess at 500-600 yards with .308s on ibex with the 150s not the heavyer bullets. we use the heavyer bullets to kill bears at close range.
but trying to kill ıbex out from 800 yards with a .308 we would not call you a hunter. we would definatly call you a good shooter but not a hunter. cause a good hunter will never risk an animal to run woonded. and like a old man said to me once: WHAT DO YOU NEED THOSE MAGNUMS FOR MY .308 OPENS A HOLE İN THE ANİMAL, ARE YOU TRYİNG TO OPEN A HOLE İNB THE MOUNTAİN?

Interesting...

Just wanted to say thanks for all the input yall shot my. Ill try some of the loads i got off of here and post the results. Thanks to all. take it easy

My son shoots a 308 Rem. and his likes 150 gr. bullets of several types, ballistic tip, psp's etc. when he tried 165 gr. bullets point of impact on the shot suffered, nut not much. As one of the other replies stated.. there's not enough powder capacity to warrant the use of a real heavy bullet.

I beg to differ. With the right powder (RL17) and 190 to 210 grain bullets, a long barrel, you can push them fast enough to make them effective. I'm expecting about 2600 or 2650 from mine with 200 SGK or Hornady 208 A-max. Look it up on the net. It's an eye opener. It's no short mag or uber magnum, but effective.

Agreed. With a 28" barrel and RL17 you can push the 200grain+ bullets at 2700+

I say that as someone who has seen the numbers on a chronograph, not just read about it on the internet.

Ok guys I am pretty new to this long range hunting and was wondering...... what sort of range would you shoot a whitetail at with a .308 cal 200grain 2700fps round ???

Using JBM Ballistics online calculator JBM - Calculations - Trajectory

Running the Hornady 208Amax (bc = .648) at 2700fps, it carries 1034lbs of energy to 1000 yards. That is sufficient to take a whitetail at that range.

This is the numbers I would be looking at where I hunt. Temp 35deg, 1000ft elevation, roughly 62 to 65% humidity, all according to JBM Calculations. This is with the 1000ft lbs minimum for damage and kill power.

200 SGK @ 2700fps= 890yds
208 A-max @ 2650fps= 990yds
180 JLK @ 2800fps= 890yds
190 JLK @ 2750fps= 930yds
210 JLK @ 2650fps= 1060yds
210 Berger @ 2650= 980yds

These are all estimates to conditions I could expect at my time of the year for deer season. Now if you can shoot in warmer conditions and higher elevations, then these distances will increase. I will caution the VLD's (JLK, and Bergers) are recommended to be around 1800fps, but I know there are some here that would take it slower making sure to do a high shoulder shot putting it through the bone.

OK Guys,

So the rule of thumb is that 1000ft/lb is deemed sufficient to drop a whitetail deer ???

I have struggled to locate any guidance on this issue. Obviously shot position has a lot to do with it, an individuals ability to place a bullet accurately at that range is paramount.

The conventional wisdom says 1000lbs for deer and 1500 for elk. Some will say 900 on deer. You are right that regardless of energy, shot placement is paramount.

In addition to energy, velocity enters the equation. Some bullets (like Berger VLD) have a velocity requirement in order to expand correctly. Berger recommends 1600fps for their hunting bullets. This comes into play because sometimes a bullet might have the energy but not the velocity.

In the previous example though, the 208amax will expand at low velocity so the 1496fps at 1000 yards is not a problem.

THAT is from A 28 inch barrel. maybe an 18 pound gun. michael eichelle has more experience than any one i know . HE could give you a good answer. the 5-r has a 24 inch barrel and is 8.5 pounds. ishot a match last
week against 308s with 28 inch barrles with custom actions and barrels and stock. very very good scopes too. i say 600 is a very long distance to shot a whitetail . it costs about 7K to hunt whitetails in saskechewan. i doubt the responders suggesting 1000 yards would try that far up there
