6.5-7mm prc

Morning Frank,
Glad to see you on here ! My question is about barrel melonite treatment.
From what I understand, it's a surface hardening procedure that SHOULD give the throat area
a degree of added protection and lifespan. I don't know if the effect is more beneficial
on a chrome moly barrel or on a 416R stainless barrel.
What is your experience or advice on meloniting ?

Reamer made it today. Hopefully will start cutting the Proof barrel by Thursday this week

I liked the WSM and wssm's but winchester did not have the hype machine to get the industry behind them like the prc's. What "if" winchester would have made a 6.5 in wsm and wssm. What "IF" winchester would have used and designed their cartridges for heavy for caliber, long throat, fast twist barrels. Or would they have been ahead of there time/market, like the 257 condor? I think the 6.5-7prc will strike a fine balance. Come on Lapua brass!!!

The 264 and 7mm are the same case. How can the 6.5 PRC have the same capacity as the 264WM?
 
7 Mag has the same capacity as the 7 PRC, correct?

264 Win is a necked down 7 Mag, basically.

So, if the 6.5 PRC is a necked down 7 PRC, the 6.5 PRC is equal in the case capacity of the 264 Win mag.

The advantage goes to the Shorter/Fater case in theory. SAAMI may have rated the PRC case at a higher pressure than the 264/7 Rem mag, I don't know the answer to this.

Thats where my babied 7rum barrels get to, when absolutely meticulously cared for... push the throttle and shoot like a wild man and 400 is not likely. One barrel we smoked at 374 on a long weekend squirrel blasting weekend. Had 100 pieces of brass and bore was ripping up more than a few bullets... heat mirage was epic those few days.

In the grand scheme of things I've tore up a sidewall an a 37 inch tire on a hunt, barrel was about the same cost way more fun per $.

Curios what 4 grain gap in the market does a 6.5-7prc fill? 6.5wsm and 264?
 
No body is trying to sell you a 6.5-7prc. if you don't like the juice don't make the squeeze, Personally I like it. If your logic is that there are other cartridges that are close, you might as well hang it up with thinking about any other new cartridge because most every thing else has been done, except a short fat powder column. with good neck length not to over bore powder capacity with decent barrel length, not trying to gain velocity in a short action over working brass, no belt to deal with and a great chance for really good brass and other components from several makers. If you don't want one don't build one. But I like it.

Ah the 6.5 PRC isn't a necked down 7PRC. There's a fairly sizable difference between the two. The 6.5 PRC is designed to run in a short action. Case length is similar to a 6.5-284.
